===Tier placement and history===
Despite having received noticeable attention due to its unexpected inclusion, initial reactions towards Piranha Plant were underwhelming due to its susceptibility to combos as well as subpar mobility and approach options. In spite of its versatile projectile and recovery, many professionals considered Piranha Plant to be a low-mid-tier character, and it saw little representation. However, the summer of 2019 saw a brief shift for Piranha Plant, mainly due to {{Sm|Brood}}'s unexpected run to 2nd at {{Trn|Umebura SP 4}}, then the closest a Piranha Plant player came to winning a major. In addition, Piranha Plant also saw successful runs from players such as {{Sm|Lucky|p=Minnesota}} and {{Sm|Greward}}, which helped boost its representation. As such, this period saw several players reconsider their opinions on Piranha Plant, with these players believing it had potential to be a mid-tier character.

Following the summer of 2019, Piranha Plant's results and representation once again declined as Brood switched characters and Greward became less active nationally. This stagnation continued into the first few years of the post-pandemic metagame, and even though Brood returned to using Piranha Plant during this time, his results declined as time went on. Although Lucky remained a threat in the Midwest and other Piranha Plant players such as {{Sm|Budoshu}} and {{Sm|Dmitrii}} had noteworthy performances in their respective regions, their major results were often inconsistent, let alone anywhere close to Brood's run at Umebura SP 4. As such, Piranha Plant became one of the least popular characters in competitive play, having ranked in the bottom 5 in terms of representation since 2021, and players widely considered it to be a low-tier character. This is reflected in its tier list placement, where it was ranked 77th on the first and second tier lists.

It was not until mid-2024 that Piranha Plant's representation finally improved once again. After improving throughout the year, {{Sm|Tas}} became the first Piranha Plant since Brood to place top 8 at a major, doing so at {{Trn|Sumabato SP 50}}, an achievement eventually recognized by [[LumiRank]] themselves when they made Tas player of the year. Alongside other strong performances with Piranha Plant throughout the second half of the year, Tas was eventually ranked 87th on the [[LumiRank 2024.2]], becoming the first Piranha Plant player to rank in the top 100 globally. This led Piranha Plant to rise slightly in the following tier list to 75th. The following year continued Piranha Plant's improving results, as {{Sm|Sparg0}} picked up Piranha Plant in mid-2025. Though many of his performances with Piranha Plant were complemented by {{SSBU|Cloud}} and the {{SSBU|Aegis}} and were likely due to Sparg0 being a top player rather than any hidden potential from Piranha Plant, they nevertheless represent some of Piranha Plant's all-time best results, which includes Sparg0's victory at {{Trn|95 Kings of Fields 5}} and {{Trn|BLINK RESPAWN 2025}}, also making him the first Piranha Plant player to win a major. His run at BLINK RESPAWN 2025 also saw him attain victories over two top 10 players; a victory over {{Sm|MkLeo}} and double eliminating {{Sm|Sonix}}, which currently stand as the best victories that a Piranha Plant player has ever achieved. These performances, alongside Tas remaining a threat in Japan, have led some to once again reconsider Piranha Plant's position on the tier list.
