Forums: Index Proposals Create a coronavirus pandemic article reflecting its effect on competitive play
Proposed.png This discussion is in regards to a proposed change on SmashWiki. The discussion must first meet with a consensus before it is implemented.

I believe we should create an article pertaining to the coronavirus global pandemic and the effect it has had on competitive play as a documentation of a notable event in competitive Smash history that is still not only ongoing but also growing. The tentative title would be: 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic and its effect on competitive play. I wanted to see what the rest of the community thought before just creating it, and I initially ran the idea on discord but figured I should make an actual proposal on the wiki. Also, Cookies and Cream has already done a good job documenting the toll the pandemic has had on the scene in this page where he has listed major tournament cancellations, postponements, and other ways they have been affected. The actual article would be based largely on his page plus whatever information related to the situation and whatever happens in the future. VoqéoT 15:10, March 12, 2020 (EDT)

Neutral/Slight support. I'll reiterate what I had stated on Discord. I made the page so I could keep track of what's cancelled and what isn't, but I don't see a major problem with having a page like that. It would be nice for it to become a page, but at the same time I'm not sure about the long-term impact on the Smash community, as only tournaments in March and April are being affected. While this does impact the PGRU and the SWT, it would only be for this year. CookiesCnC Signature.pngCreme 15:44, March 12, 2020 (EDT)

Slight oppose, at least for now. I don't see the harm of having an article on this, but it also doesn't seem super necessary considering we haven't covered other pandemics when they've affected tournaments (for example, H1N1 in 2009). I think it'd be best to wait on it so we don't make a rash decision on something that would date quickly. ~ Serena Strawberry (talk) 15:56, March 12, 2020 (EDT)

To be fair, even if there were tournaments affected by the H1N1, there wouldn't be much we can find about it since most tournaments would be lost in time, especially the Brawl tournaments. CookiesCnC Signature.pngCreme 16:17, March 12, 2020 (EDT)
Yeah, that's what I mean. Right now, we simply won't know if it'll have a long-lasting effect or will be forgotten in a few years. If we wait until after it's contained, we can make a more informed decision on whether the article is necessary and notable as a historical documentation or not. ~ Serena Strawberry (talk) 16:37, March 12, 2020 (EDT)
Oppose. I don't think that it's entirely necessary to have a full-on article about this, but it's definitely not a bad idea to mention it in general. Aidan, the Rurouni 16:50, March 12, 2020 (EDT)

It was also brought up on the Discord that it may be a good idea to have a list of significant worldwide events and their impact on Smash tournaments, which would be more general and cover things like natural disasters as well as pandemics. (The name could be tweaked a bit.) I'd be in support of that, since that way we could have a section noting the impact of COVID-19 while still putting off making an individual article until we know its full extent. What do you all think? ~ Serena Strawberry (talk) 16:55, March 12, 2020 (EDT)
