Nintendo Classics, formerly known as the Nintendo Switch Online classic game libraries, is a series of applications featuring games from various Nintendo hardware that can be played only if a user is subscribed to a Nintendo Switch Online service, and is the successor to the Virtual Console series. First launched on September 18, 2018, Nintendo has developed multiple apps based on their old hardware, with a selected list of games receiving additional changes such as a widescreen option and online multiplayer support. Nintendo Classics has also games under the label "SP", where the selected game will have a different save state or other minor changes to the base counterpart.
Compared to its predecessor, there are some unique content to this library. One of them is the release of unpublished games, with such cases like Star Fox 2 on Super Nintendo, albeit released previously on the SNES Classic in 2017, and both Zero Racers and Dragon Hopper on Virtual Boy in 2026. Other exclusive features include modified ROMs for a few games, such as GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64 and Soulcalibur II on Nintendo GameCube including a widescreen mode, and a couple of games featuring an online multiplayer mode.
On its launch for the Nintendo Switch, only games from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) were available. More retro hardware were released throughout the years with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 2019 and the Game Boy and Game Boy Color in 2023. Even more retro hardware were made available for subscribers of the Expansion Pack, an expanded tier of the service, with the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive in 2021, the Game Boy Advance in 2023, and the Virtual Boy in 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 received more hardware that are only available on it, compared to its predecessor, with the Nintendo GameCube in 2025. Replicas of their controllers, and headset for the Virtual Boy, were manufactured and sold for these software, with some of them working on other Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games.

Notes[edit]
In the Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
So far, neither Super Smash Bros. or Super Smash Bros. Melee were released to Nintendo Classics' Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube libraries respectively. However, the former game was accidentally shown for a trailer based on new features added to the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the Nintendo 64 library. It was shown alongside other Nintendo 64 games that were not released in its upload day, albeit blurred in the background, but were released a bit after the Nintendo Switch 2 was distributed to the public.[1][2]
Nintendo GameCube controllers that were sold as Nintendo Switch Online Controllers, and are internally identified as Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers, are compatible with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, it is identified as both a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and a Nintendo GameCube controller and this issue was not patched as of now.
Trivia[edit]
- So far, the Nintendo DS, the Wii, the Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U are the only game consoles released before the Nintendo Switch to not have any of their games on Nintendo Classics.
