Article on WikiBound Undertale (universe)

Undertale, officially stylized as UNDERTALE, refers to the indie role-playing game created by Toby Fox represented in Super Smash Bros. and spiritual successor to the EarthBound series. The official symbol of the series is a heart, which represents the player's soul.

Undertale is known for being one of the most successful indie games of all time, being praised for its quirky humor, story, gameplay and music. In Super Smash Bros. the series is represented by the game's main character, Frisk, appearing as an upcoming playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, along with an unrevealed stage. Previously a recurring character, Sans, was released as a downloadable Mii Gunner costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of Round 3. The costume also comes with a new arrangement of his boss theme MEGALOVANIA as a DLC music track, only playing on stages with music currently listed in the "Other" category, although it was confirmed that said music track will be moved to the Undertale universe upon Frisk's release.

Franchise description[edit]

Undertale was created by indie game designer Toby Fox, who previously worked on EarthBound fan games in the past such as the EarthBound Halloween Hack.

Undertale was developed by Toby Fox across 32 months. Development was financed through a crowdfunding campaign on the website Kickstarter. The campaign was launched on June 25, 2013 with a goal of US$5,000; it ended on July 25, 2013, with US$51,124 raised by 2,398 people (1022.48% of the original goal). Undertale's creation ensued after Fox created a battle system using the game creation system GameMaker: Studio.[18] He wanted to develop a role-playing game that was different from the traditional design, which he often found "boring to play". He set out to develop a game with "interesting characters", and that "utilizes the medium as a storytelling device ... instead of having the story and gameplay abstractions be completely separate".

The first installment in the series, Undertale released on September 15, 2015 for the Microsoft Windows. The game stars a child who fell into the Underground and begins a journey to return to the surface. Throught the game Frisk will come accross different monsters who Frisk has the option of killing or sparing them. There are three different routes that can be taken depending on how the player deals with the monsters  thry meet: the "Normal Route" is taken when the player kills some but not all monsters, the "Genocide Route" is taken when the player kills all of the monsters, and the "True Pacifist Route" is taken when all monsters are spared.

Undertale recieved incredibly strong positive reception almost immediately upon release. Many critics praise the storyline and quirky characters. Players applauded the unique battle system baded on the player navigating through mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. The music for the game was also greatly appreciated, with one of the most famous songs being MEGALOVANIA, which itself has appeared in several other fan games made by Toby Fox, such as the aforementioned EarthBound Halloween Hack under the title Dr. Andonuts's Rage.

Undertale had also recieved several sequals, such as Deltarune, which takes place in a different world from Undertale, but still features the characters and other similarities. Currently a new installment to the Undertale series is in development and will also be part of the EarthBound series. The game is being developed by Toby Fox and the creator of the EarthBound franchise Shigesato Itoi as a crossover of the to franchises. The game was announced on April 1, 2020 with the title EarthBound: Down Under and is expected to release on April 1, 2021.
