The GameStop Midnight Release was a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament circuit created as a partnership between Nintendo and GameStop. The circuit started on March 8, 2008 at 2500 GameStop locations across the United States at 10:00 pm local time. The winner of each location would then participate in a series of district tournaments, the winners of those advancing to regional tournament, and finally the remaining top eight advancing to the semi-finals and finals in San Jose, California. The grand prize was a television set, a Wii console and select accessories, an entire Wii software library, and $5000 in cash. Second and third prizes included GameStop gift cards.[1][2][3]

Trivia[edit]
- The official press release for this event claimed a prize was a Vizio 37-inch LCD-TV,[3], though a flyer for the event claimed it was a plasma screen.[2]
- Due to a general distaste with the official rules, many GameStop tournament organizers allegedly created alternative rulesets. Commonly reported changes include changing the timer to 2:00 during round 1, letting players decide which stages to play on instead of just Battlefield, and allowing players to select a random stage.[4]
- Due to how random stage selection works in Brawl, there was a chance players had to fight on one of the three pre-loaded custom stages.[5]
