Onsite images versus offsite images[edit]

Kadano has brought up the idea of using gfycat for hitbox animations, as opposed to simply hosting such files on-wiki. Assuming we'd still want to display them on pages, this would require Extension:EmbedVideo. I'm on the fence about this idea (undecided about saving bandwidth vs. being dependant on another site), so I thought I'd open it here. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Spark 10:24, 9 November 2014 (EST)

Thank you for taking this request seriously. At the example page linked to from your link, I added an example gfycat video: [1]. Unfortunately, the frame step options are not included, but only available through clicking on the video (which links to the gfycat view page).
More so than the bandwidth saving, I feel that the frame step (forward and backward) and speed control provided by gfycat would be excellent for content like move animations. Right now, it's not possible to add those in with this level of flexibility in viewing.
In my opinion, the best solution would be to host the .mp4 (or .webm) videos here and use / create a custom video extension that also features frame stepping and speed control. I'm not sure whether that already exists, and if not, how much work it would involve, but I'm trying to find out. Kadano talk 19:25, 9 November 2014 (EST)
