Dig and Drill Claw in Project+. | |
| User | Knuckles |
| Universe | Sonic the Hedgehog |
Dig is Knuckles' neutral special move, exclusively in the modification Project+. When use in the air, it becomes Drill Claw.
Overview[edit]
Dig is Knuckles' neutral special when used on solid ground. When used, he will begin digging into the ground and burrow out of sight, before popping back out with a strong uppercut. While in the ground, Knuckles can move across the ground, telegraphed with a dirt trail, and also cannot be hit. After a few second, he will follow with the attack portion of the move automatically. Its powerful punch makes it a good chasing option, and can serve as a viable mix-up.
When using his neutral special in the air or on a semisolid, Knuckles will perform Drill Claw. After a brief period of startup, Knuckles will dive fist-first in a corkscrew motion. This continues until he reaches solid ground, in which he burrows similarly to Dig. The diving hitbox can drag any foe caught in the attack with him, effectively serving as a spike. This makes for an effective mix-up tool like Dig, and can also function as an aerial edgeguarding option. However, players must be careful not to use the move recklessly in an area without solid ground, as the attack will send him spiraling towards the lower blast zone.
Origin[edit]
The Dig made its debut in Sonic Adventure, while the Drill Claw made its debut in Sonic Adventure 2, with both since becoming core aspects of Knuckles' modern toolkit.
In both games, Knuckles originally needed to acquire the Shovel Claws in order to utilize Dig, although later appearances show him using the move without this item. Knuckles digs and buries into the surface he is digging on, and emerges after a moment, often with the intent of finding a collectable. This mainly found use in his treasure hunting levels, specifically to unearth shards of the Master Emerald that are occasionally hidden in the ground. Unlike Project+, Knuckles can also use the move while climbing.
The aerial version of the move is Drill Claw, another move exclusive to the Shovel Claws item in its debut. Drill Claw functions as a quick drop-down option, leaving after-images in his wake, as well as serving as an attack that can pierce through enemies in his way. If the player keeps holding the action button, Knuckles will Dig on contact with a surface. The move later appeared by itself in Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Advance 3, functioning as his Stop n' Slam move.
In addition, the punch he performs after emerging from the ground is a callback to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in which he ambushes Super Sonic with a rising attack from the ground.
