Charizard (リザードン, Lizardon) returns as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it is now a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Its voice actor, Shinichiro Miki, returns to voice Charizard in this installment, with new voice clips.

Changes from Brawl

Charizard appears to be buffed from Brawl, and the most significant change made to Charizard is that it is no longer part of the Pokémon Trainer, so it is now its own character.

Aesthetics

  • Change Charizard now flaps its wings while dashing.
  • Change Without Pokemon Trainer, all of Charizard's victory poses have changed.

Attributes

  • Buff Charizard is heavier.
  • Buff Type effectiveness no longer applies, thus removing Charizard's water weakness and grass resistance. As the newcomer Greninja has many water attacks, and no characters at all have grass attacks, this is a buff overall.
  • Nerf Charizard, along with Pit and Meta Knight, can no longer glide.

Ground attacks

  • Nerf Forward and down tilts deal less damage.
  • Buff Forward smash has a new animation and is stronger.
  • Change Down smash has an altered animation.

Air attacks

  • Nerf Charizard's new forward aerial, a claw slash, deals slightly less damage.
  • Buff Back aerial is stronger.
  • Change Up aerial has a somewhat tweaked animation, with Charizard thrusting its head sideways instead of straight up.
  • Buff Down aerial is stronger, and deals 1% more damage. It has also been sped up a bit.
  • Nerf Down aerial can now be sourspotted by hitting late, dealing less damage and weaker horizontal knockback.

Throws/other attacks

  • Buff Forward throw is slightly stronger.
  • Buff Back throw deals slightly more damage, has strengthened a little, and has slightly less ending lag, so it can combo into a forward air or dash attack more reliably at lower percentages.
  • Change Charizard has a new up throw, where it brings its opponent into the air and crashes them into the ground, similarly to Kirby's up throw. Possibly based on Seismic Toss. The new up throw deals less damage but can combo into a neutral air or forward air on most characters under 45%.
  • Nerf Down throw is slightly weaker (can only start KO'ing starting at 185%), though it's still Charizard's strongest throw.
