Zelda (ゼルダ, Zeruda) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. She was announced on December 26, 2013, the date on which The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was released in Japan. Sheik also returns as a playable character, but fully separate and not accessible via transformation. Unlike other The Legend of Zelda characters, Zelda did not get any notable appearance changes, sporting the same realistic look from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that she had in Brawl, albeit with general graphical upgrades.

Her voice actress is Jun Mizusawa, who voiced her in Melee, Brawl, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess.

Changes from Brawl

Without the ability to transform into Sheik, Zelda has been changed to allow her to stand on her own.

  • Buff Forward tilt, up smash and neutral aerial have been buffed.
  • Buff Din's Fire will receive additional buffing, with its explosion now growing larger the longer the move is projected, and it'll now have a more powerful sweet spot at the center of the explosion, though the extent of the sweet spot's power and the explosion's greater potential size has not been explicitly stated.
  • Buff Has lost the ability to Transform into Sheik, with the latter becoming her own separate character. To replace Transform, Zelda has a new down special move called Phantom Slash, where she summons a Phantom Armor that shoots out like a projectile, before materialising and attacking. It can also block attacks, and it appears it can be charged to summon the Phantom at farther distances; the Phantom can be reflected as well.
  • Buff Down smash is much stronger, now being able to KO under 110% when fully charged.
  • Buff Both Lightning Kicks (fair and bair) are stronger, improving their already strong power.
  • Buff Down aerial's sweetspot deals more damage, and appears to have a longer horizontal range.
  • Buff Down tilt has slightly longer horizontal range, and noticeably less ending lag.
  • Buff Sweetspotted dash attack deals more damage than in Brawl. It also appears to have strengthened somewhat.
  • Buff Nayru's Love has been sped up.
  • Buff Farore's Wind is much stronger upon reappearing and deals more damage.
  • Buff Up aerial deals more damage than in Brawl.
    • Nerf However, it is weaker.
  • Change Down throw now has fire graphics added to its magic graphics, similarily to Ness's down throw.
    • Buff It now send opponents at a vertical angle, which give up new follow-ups options. As a result of this, it has possibly become Zelda's best throw. It is also drastically faster.
  • Change Forward tilt has new visual effects to match its slash effect.
    • Nerf It no longer sends opponents backwards, removing its combo potential with her back Lightning Kick and her up tilt as been weakened to the point where it can only K.O. at 120-160% depending of the character's weight, while in Brawl it could K.O. at 80-100%, increasing the percentage number where characters can be K.O. by it.
      • Buff This improves the move's K.O. potential. The latter also has become a very reliable juggling and comboing move at lower percentages

just like her down tilt until it gets K.O. potential.

  • Nerf Nayru's Love, down throw and up tilt all deal less damage.
  • Change Zelda has gotten a new air dodge animation and sidestep pose. The former is now a pose similar to Zero Suit Samus's air dodge's pose and the latter now resembles Peach's.
  • Change Zelda's up taunt has a different animation.
  • The following moves appear visually unchanged:
    • Neutral attack
    • Down tilt
    • Forward smash
    • Back aerial
    • Pummel
    • Back throw
    • Light Arrow
    • Side/down taunt
    • Rolling animation

Special Moves

Zelda retains her final smash as well as three of her original special moves. Transform has been replaced with Phantom Slash, due to Sheik becoming her own character. These are Zelda's special moves, including custom moves:

Special Move Basic Custom 1 Custom 2
Neutral Special Nayru's Love Nayru's Rejection Nayru's Passion
Side Special Din's Fire Din's Flare Din's Blaze
Up Special Farore's Wind Farore's Squall Farore's Windfall
Down Special Phantom Slash Phantom Breaker Phantom Strike
Final Smash Light Arrow

Trophies

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions

Zelda's regular trophy can be obtained by completing Classic Mode and her alternative trophy can be obtained by completing All-Star mode.

Zelda
This is the namesake of the Legend of Zelda games. Her appearance may change, but she always plays an important role. In Smash Bros., she's quick on the draw when it comes to magic, though a bit slow when moving. She has a new move that summons a Phantom to her aid.
Zelda (Alt.)
Zelda's forward air attack, Lightning Kick, is a valiant kick with a magically charged tip. Striking with just the glowing spot will deal heavy damage and launch your opponent. Din's Fire, her explosive side special, can be guided up and down and has a greater blast if the button is held.

Update history

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS 1.0.4

  • Buff Up tilt damage increased from 6.5% to 7%.
