After the first few seconds in battle, Dialga, Palkia, or Cresselia shows up in the background of the stage. The player can tell what Pokémon will appear by the color of the stage. The Pokemon will perform different attacks when they appear. Dialga will shoot a vertical beam covering 1/3 of the stage, Palkia will fire a horizontal beam covering the bottom level, and Dialga and Palkia will both create abnormalities within the stage's dimensions, such as Roar of Time, which can slow down the time of the stage temporarlily, and Spacial Rend, which can tilt the stage, flip it sideways, or turn it upside-down. the latter two not effecting gravity, but you might need to turn your head or hold a mirror up to the TV when they happen to see the game clearly. They can also destroy part of the floor. On occasion, Dialga will also leap off of his pedestal and unleash an aura. Cresselia, on the other hand, will shoot an energy blade which randomly flies around the stage (probably Psycho Cut), harming anyone who comes in contact with it. She is the only one of the three who does not distort the stage in any fashion.

The Lake Trio, Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit, also make appearances here. However, these Pokémon are confirmed only to sit and watch, not conduct any other experiments on the stage.

Team Galactic, the antagonists of Diamond & Pearl, travel up to Spear Pillar and awaken Dialga/Palkia in order to control the world. Dawn/Lucas travel up to Spear Pillar, where they impede Team Galactics plan to control the legendary Pokémon by defeating their boss Cyrus. Upon defeat, Team Galactic retreats and the player has the opportunity to catch Dialga/Palkia.

In the Super Smash Brothers series

Spear Pillar has been confirmed to appear as a playable stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Dialga, Palkia, and Cresselia make cameo appearances in the background to devastate the players. It is a destructible stage, which also features a cave underneath the surface which players can brawl in. Spear Pillar can be unlocked by completing Event 25.
