A thorn helix in The Swamp.
In Subspace Emissary, certain levels with water include a hazard that bursts of of the water. These appear as thorned spirals of vine, and will often destroy some of the terrain and slash a player if they are touched. However, they are not enemies, and cannot be destroyed. Because of this, it is unknown whether they serve the Subspace Army or whether they are just a natural part of the area.
This hazard only appears in The Swamp and The Great Maze.
