The Game Awards, sometimes referred to as simply Game Awards is an annual awards show/game conference that has been held in the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, California since 2014. In addition to other reveals and announcements, Nintendo has showcased new developments and accepted awards concerning Super Smash Bros. Ultimate since 2018.

Game Awards 2018

Towards the end of the show, a trailer for what seemed like Persona 5 started playing. However, partway though the trailer, it was revealed to be a surprise Smash reveal, announcing Joker as DLC Challenger Pack 1. Following the trailer, Reggie Fils-Aimé vaguely explained how all DLC fighters will be "new to the series" and "unexpected." Immediately after, the Game Awards orchestra played an epic orchestra version of Life Light.

Prior to the event, Nintendo announced that a Smash character reveal trailer would occur during the show. The trailer announced Sephiroth as DLC Challenger Pack 8.
