The Game Awards
The Game Awards, sometimes referred to as simply Game Awards, is an annual awards show and game conference that has been held in the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, California since 2014. In addition to other reveals and announcements, Nintendo has showcased new developments and accepted awards concerning the Super Smash Bros. series since its inception.
- Best Mobile/Handheld Game (for Nintendo 3DS, Nominated)
- Best Fighting Game (for Wii U, Won) (for Nintendo 3DS, Nominated)
Towards the end of the show, a trailer for what seemed like Persona 5 started playing. However, partway through the trailer, it was revealed to be a surprise Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveal, announcing Joker as the fighter in DLC Challenger Pack 1. Following the trailer, Reggie Fils-Aimé vaguely explained how all DLC fighters will be "new to the series" and "unexpected." Immediately after, the Game Awards Orchestra played an epic orchestrated version of Lifelight.
While there were no Smash announcements, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was nominated for four awards, winning one. Once again, the Game Awards Orchestra played Lifelight as a part of the orchestrated medley for Game of the Year nominations.
- Game of the Year (Nominated)
- Best Fighting Game (Won)
- Best Family Game (Nominated)
- Player's Voice (Nominated)
Prior to the event, Nintendo announced that an Ultimate character reveal trailer would occur during the show. The trailer occurred shortly after the start of the show and announced Sephiroth as the fighter in DLC Challenger Pack 8.
