You may notice the words "unofficial" and "fan fiction". People have been using the term "Smashers" to refer to the playable characters since the Melee days - I myself have been using it for over four years (estimated). On the other hand, when people are talking about things in an external context (talking about strategies or game physics or stuff) they tend to say "character". Haha. I still think they should be called characters, and that the opinions of fans' shouldn't overrule fact. If it helps my case, in my entire ten years of playing this series, never have I heard anyone call them smashers. Then again, I am in Texas. It's a big state but it's extremely empty.
