I've been bugged by this question but, have you ever shown anything about handling user disputes? ZeldaStarfoxfan2164 (talk) is made in America 11:37, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- Have I shown anything? Not that I can remember, but you can always present me with a hypothetical scenario similar to the one you yourself were presented with recently. VinLAURiA (talk) 18:17, 20 November 2014 (EST)
May you explain exactly what you would do different if you were an admin than what you do now? Rtzxy Reflect! 19:09, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- Well, one example is how I attempted to move the "Congo Jungle" entry over to "Kongo Jungle (SSB)" after I felt consensus was reached for the move, although as the destination page already existed as a redirect from the last time this was brought up, I couldn't do a proper move and instead (and I admit this was in error) just did a full-content copy. With adminsistrative abilities, I would've been able to do a proper overwrite and move, leaving the page history intact as required by wiki policy. Due to this, I was told I should "wait for admin to take action" on issues instead of trying to handle it myself; as an admin, I would have that agency. I don't consider myself wrong in attempting the move in the first place (though my method may have been), as I believe consensus was reached with a 7:2 vote and a decline in active discussion on the issue. Was I wrong in that conclusion? VinLAURiA (talk) 19:25, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- You are not wrong about that conclusion, but would you know how to move it in that situation? In fact, do you know (at least a little) on some admin tools? Just wondering, though the answer will probably be "no." If it's not, then there's that. Rtzxy Reflect! 19:33, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- I have a local MySQL server with a private MediaWiki installation set up on my own computer for use as a journal (needlessly convoluted, I know; I've since resorted to just using Google Drive like a sane person), so I'm not unfamiliar with the admin controls. Trying to move something to a page already in use brings up a prompt that asks you whether you want to delete what's already there. At least, that's the case on my installation, running MediaWiki 1.17.0 (I haven't touched the thing in a while.) I imagine the process hasn't changed, though I don't actively keep up with MediaWiki's change logs. Of course, if there's some better method - something involving the command prompt, for instance - I don't know that. VinLAURiA (talk) 20:50, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- All right, you know some admin tools, but (and sorry for the stupid question, but I'm curious) do you know how to actually use those tools? Rtzxy Reflect! 21:06, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- That's a pretty vague question. VinLAURiA (talk) 21:09, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- All right, how about a less vague question: which admin tools do you know how to use? Rtzxy Reflect! 21:13, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- You mean like the stuff on SpecialPages? Or the more behind-the-scenes stuff like dealing with the installation itself? VinLAURiA (talk) 21:50, 20 November 2014 (EST)

(resetting indent) I believe he means stuff like deletion and protection. Only porplemontage has the ability to install extensions. PikaSamus (talk) 21:54, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- Pretty much anything on this page (you know, before you read it), though it'd be nice if you know the installation stuff as well. Rtzxy Reflect! 21:57, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- Another stupid question: are you an admin, or have you applied for adminship, on another wiki? Rtzxy Reflect! 22:17, 20 November 2014 (EST)
- I know some of that stuff; admittedly I haven't ever really used stuff that deals with user management since - being a journal - my personal installation only ever had me using it. As for whether I've ever staffed another wiki online, that would be a no. I've been minor staff on a couple miscellaneous game community sites over the years and I've done a good few editing runs on several wikis as a standard member, but I've never staffed any wikis. Ok, this has gone about for a week by now. We currently got three opposing votes, one neutral to opposing vote and one neutral vote. Anybody else want to voice their opinion? Dots (talk) The Doctor 10:03, 28 November 2014 (EST)
