A glitched 1-player match on For Glory.
A 0-second match in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

A 0-second match is a glitched match which ends as soon as it starts.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

It is possible to initiate a 0-Second Melee with a variation of the Name Entry glitch, discovered by Exchord92.

The glitch can be performed by using the following method:

Once in Melee mode, players in Custom Rules select Stock mode and set the number of stocks to anything. They should select one and only one character. Then, they can perform the glitch as follows:

  1. Once the cursor over the name field, the player should press A and B simultaneously.
  2. The player should release A, but continue holding B.
  3. The player should scroll down to "Name Entry." Then, the player should press A at the correct time whilst still holding B.
  4. If this is timed correctly, the player will go to the Stage Select screen. Select a stage.

If the player performed the glitch correctly and the game does not freeze, the Melee will end as soon as the announcer says, "Go!"

Players can also perform this glitch with two to four characters all on the same team (using the black character glitch) instead of only one player. The match will end instantaneously due to there being only one team remaining (or in this case, starting the match).

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

As of version 1.0.9, a 1 vs 1 For Glory match can start with one player if:

  1. both players have selected their character, and are waiting in the lobby
  2. after the confirmation sound plays and the screen starts going black, but before the actual beginning of the battle, one of the players disconnects.

The still-online player then enters a 1-player match, which ends just a few tenths of a second after it starts.

Explanation

A match with only one character is impossible under normal scenarios. However, since the game is forced to initiate it regardless, all opposing stock has already been depleted at the start of the battle and the player wins instantly.
