Mario Bros. (マリオブラザーズ, Mario Barazāzū) is an arcade game made by Nintendo, released in 1983 as an arcade game and later ported to many home systems. It was the first game to feature Mario's name in the title, and was also the debut of Mario's brother, Luigi.

Single Player

The goal is to eiminate all enemies in the "room" to clear each level. Enemies are "stunned" by hitting the platform on which they are from below with a jump. To eliminate them, you must touch them before they recover. If they do, their color will change(from red to green to blue) and they will become faster. The last enemy of each level is always blue.

Enemies

  • Shellcreeper: A turtle. Predecessor to the Koopa Troopas. One hit will stun it.
  • Sidestepper: A crab. Tougher than the Shellcreeper. Requires two hits.
  • Fighter Fly: A tricky enemy. Hops around and can only be stunned when not airborne.
  • Freezie: Destroyed when stunned, ths enemy will eventually stop and freeze a platform, making it slippery.
  • Fireballs: These fireballs occasionally appear. They are destroyed like Freezies, but only when just over a platform.

In the Super Smash Bros. series

  • Luigi, who premeired in this game, is an unlockable character for all three games. Luigi's white costume is also reminiscent of what he wore in the NES version of this game. Additionally, his fireballs are identical to the green ones that are seen in this game.
  • The Freezie enemies in this game became an Item in Super Smash Bros. Melee,
  • The Shellcreeper enemies are the predecessors to the Koopa Troopas, which play many roles in the series.
  • Mario Bros. appears as a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but Freezies, Red Fireballs, and Fighter Flies are not present.
  • Coins make their first appearance in this game as collectable bonus items.
  • Though probably a coincidence, the Mario Bros. can jump on top of each other in this game, identical to Footstool Jumping.
  • Mario and Luigi's fireballs go in a certain direction on purpose in the SSB series due to the direction the red and green fireballs go in the original Mario Bros.
