You may notice the words "unofficial" and "fan fiction". People have been using the term "Smashers" to refer to the playable characters since the Melee days - I myself have been using it for over four years (estimated). On the other hand, when people are talking about things in an external context (talking about strategies or game physics or stuff) they tend to say "character". Haha. I still think they should be called characters, and that the opinions of fans' shouldn't overrule fact. If it helps my case, in my entire ten years of playing this series, never have I heard anyone call them smashers. Then again, I am in Texas. It's a big state but it's extremely empty. Well, as I said, people never call them Smashers in the context of the actual game. You don't hear people say "Pikachu's my best Smasher", they say "Pikachu's my best character". That said, the term "Smasher" pops up too frequently in the in-universe context to be ignorable (in my opinion, anyway). The terms "character" (which only makes sense out-of-universe) and "fighter" (which the Dojo!! used but only makes sense in the context of an actual fight) don't seem to stick with fans.
