Yoshi (SSBB)/Down smash
Overview[edit]
The move comes on frame 6, which is fairly fast for a down smash and has solid range. However, this move is very laggy. The front hit is -39 on normal shield which is very bad. Ike's forward smash can punish the move without power shielding. The back hit is much slower, not coming until frame 22, but it is 17 frames safer on normal shield. Another big flaw this move has its ko power. When sweetspotted, the front hit deals 14 percent and does not ko Mario until over 189 percent without DI and momentum cancelling. The move also has a sour spot which deals even less knock back, not koing Mario until over 230 percent under the same circumstances, and the back hit deals slightly less damage and knockback.
One useful trait that down smash has is that launches at a semi spike angle and it is fast, which allows for potential kills at high percents at the ledge. It can be useful for spacing at high percents and can set up combos with good timing (at least for the back hit). Lastly, it can be useful as a last resort ko move at the ledge.
In conclusion, Yoshi's down smash is bad. While the move is fast, has good range and launches at a good angle for edgeguarding, it is very laggy and very weak, making the move high risk, low reward move.
