==Origin==

Waluigi made his debut in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Tennis|Nintendo 64}}'' and has become a recurring character in later ''Mario'' spin-off games. He is a lanky man with a big, pink nose, a pointed mustache, pointed ears, and eyes surrounded by light blue rings. He wears dark indigo overalls, a purple undershirt, a purple cap with a yellow "Γ" gamma symbol, a pair of white gloves, and a pair of orange pointed shoes. In the ''Mario'' spin-off games, Waluigi is shown to have powerful legs, able to easily kick Bowser.

Waluigi is [[Luigi]]'s self-appointed rival and dark counterpart, just as [[Wario]] is the rival of [[Mario]]. This rivalry began in the opening cutscene of ''Mario Tennis'' where Waluigi and Wario interrupt the final match between Mario and Luigi stating they want to play, but Luigi declines and mocks Waluigi, upsetting him. Waluigi is typically shown to be a spiteful, vindictive cheater; motivated by grudges and taking losses poorly while blaming others for his failures. On some occasions, Waluigi is shown in a raunchy, flirtatious light, examples including his frequent display of roses, a universal symbol for romance, as well as his signature crotch chop in the ''Mario Strikers'' series. Like most ''Mario'' villains including Wario, Waluigi will sometimes join the side of good against greater threats, particularly in the ''Mario Party'' series. Oddly, despite appearing frequently as Wario's partner-in-crime in various ''Mario'' spin-off games, he has not physically appeared in a {{uv|Wario}} game. Currently, his only appearance in a ''Wario'' game is if a Waluigi [[amiibo]] is scanned in {{s|mariowiki|Wario's amiibo Sketch}} in ''{{s|mariowiki|WarioWare Gold}}'', in which Wario draws a poor quality picture of him. Waluigi very rarely plays a significant role in games' plots, and is typically equivalent to a cosmetic in games where he is playable. In games where Waluigi is given distinctive functional characteristics, he is usually a technical character who is meant to be played with immense precision and attention to defense, and uses Bob-Ombs. Waluigi's most major plot roles are ''{{iw|mariowiki|Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix}}'' and ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Tennis Aces}}'', where he causes the inciting incidents - the theft and subsequent loss of the Music Keys and the release of the evil tennis racket Lucien respecitvely - though both games end with battles against [[Bowser]], with ''Mario Mix'' having Waluigi be thwarted the first world in before a scavenger hunt for the other Keys, while ''Tennis Aces'' has Waluigi be possessed by Lucien for most of the story runtime. Waluigi has never headlined a game release on Nintendo hardware, but has headlined multiple promotional internet games, most of which are simple generic games, typically based on a template used for other ''Mario'' chracters (such as coloring and jigsaw puzzles), with a notable and infamous exception being the highly-sought-after lost browser game ''{{iw|mariowiki|Waluigi's Foot Fault}}'', in which players clip and collect Waluigi's toenails, released in 2000 to mark the character's debut.

Waluigi makes his debut as an Assist Trophy. He appears with brown shoes instead of his usual orange shoes, and is armed with his tennis racket from ''Mario Tennis''.

When summoned, Waluigi dashes at a random opponent on stage and stomps them into the ground (although he can stomp multiple opponents at once if others around are caught in the stomps). He stomps the victim(s) multiple times before unleashing a finishing blow with his tennis racket or a kick. His kicks [[meteor smash]] if the opponent is a little outside the stage. Unless he attacks constantly, his final attack has a pause which lasts about three seconds. He is relatively easy to avoid on the stage, as he can be avoided by simply jumping over him and it can be quite easy to lure him off-stage; however, if opponents are careless, he can be quite deadly.

Waluigi returns as an Assist Trophy, reprising his behavior from ''Brawl''. Similar to {{SSB4|Mario}} and {{SSB4|Luigi}}, his appearance is more cartoonish, with less detail on his clothing and lighter, more solid colors used all around. Notably, his shoes are now closer to the proper orange coloring, as opposed to the brown shoes in ''Brawl''. Like most of the on-stage Assist Trophies, Waluigi can be attacked and KO'd.

Both Waluigi Spirit Battles use a {{SSBU|Luigi}} puppet fighter. 

The Waluigi spirit is fought on the [[Peach's Castle]] stage, with the latter and the music track referencing the {{s|mariowiki|Waluigi Pinball}} race course from ''Mario Kart DS'' based on the bumper and the two floating inward-angled platforms resembling pinball slingshots. During the battle, Waluigi appears as a hostile Assist Trophy. 

The Waluigi (Super Mario Strikers) spirit is fought on the [[Wuhu Island]] stage's Swordplay Colosseum layout, referencing the soccer arenas in the ''Mario Strikers'' series, which takes place on a field in a crowded stadium. During the battle, the Soccer Ball item will appear, referencing the sport that this spirit's origin game is based on.

*In the [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xUWnQu2Grs&t=15m2s Super Smash Bros. Direct 4.8.2014], Waluigi was shown to be representing the ''Wario'' universe as opposed to the ''Mario'' universe. This change was not carried over to the final version of the game.
**In that same Direct, when Waluigi is laughing, his mouth is open. In the final game, however, his mouth is always closed, even when he is laughing. This is strange, considering how in ''Brawl'', his mouth is open while laughing. This is fixed in ''Ultimate'', where his mouth is opened while laughing.
