User:The Other Jared/Melee Controller Ruleset Proposal
The Melee Controller Ruleset Proposal is a document first written in 2024 that suggests a set of guidelines for how various video game controllers should function when used to play Super Smash Bros. Melee. While this proposal was written primarily for Melee controllers, it can theoretically be applicable for any controller when used in any similar game.
History[edit]
The prevalence of controller modifications and unofficial third-party controllers in the Melee community grew rapidly in the the 2010s, in part due to aging hardware necessitating repairs and replacements, players growing older and developing various types of motor function restriction that require specific controllers to work around, and a general demand to create the "perfect" Melee controller. As their had never been an official constitution on what a controller can and cannot be capable of by Nintendo or any other governing body, many controversial controllers were released that were accused of going beyond accessibility and delving into the realm of cheating. Authority on the legality of these controllers often fell on individual tournament organizers without much communication between each other, leading to inconsistent and sometimes contradictory rulings between what should be prestigious events.
Reception[edit]
While the proposal has an overall positive reception, it has been met with significant controversy. The attempt to unify a splintered community under one ruleset has been commended, and.
Many have scrutinized the proposal and found faults with it, such as niche cases and exceptions it doesn't account for like very specific degenerative conditions requiring a controller that either has no ruling or even violates the rules, as well as certain controllers being nerfed into infeasibility and making users of those controllers feel unwelcome.
