==Characters==

All 26 characters (25 if Zelda and Sheik are counted as one character) from ''Melee'' appear in ''The Akaneia Build'', unchanged from how they played in the original game, though they have been given new [[alternate costume]]s. As of v1.0, there are currently seven new characters added to the mod, consisting of six characters from ''Melee''{{'}}s successor, ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', and one newcomer, bringing the total up to 33 (32 if Zelda and Sheik are counted as one character). Notably for the new characters, the [[announcer]] will say "Bonus Character" (edited together by splicing the "bonus stage" and "choose your character" voice clips) when they are selected rather than saying their names; they also do not have crowd cheers, though they can earn the "Crowd Favorite" [[List of bonuses|bonus]] all the same. These characters do not appear as CPUs in any of the single-player modes.

In addition to the 29 stages from ''Melee'', ''Akaneia'' has introduced 18 new stages as of the release of v1.0. These include all remaining [[Past Stages]] from ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'', a selection of period-appropriate stages from ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl|Brawl]]'', and several original stages. Some ''Brawl'' stages have undergone aesthetic changes to reflect the GameCube era, removing elements that originated in later series entries.

As of v1.0, all of these new stages have been moved to a separate "Bonus" page on the stage select screen. The new stages do not appear in any of the single-player modes.

*When fighting as Tails on the Green Hill Zone stage, a Tails Chao will replace him in the background.

*In the GameCube Realm stage, holding a direction on the D-Pad during selection will apply one of four color palettes for the stage, each of which is based on one of the four colors the GameCube was released in: indigo (up), jet black (right), platinum (down), or spice orange (left).
*Holding down on the D-Pad on all active controllers during a background transition in GameCube Realm will cause a game of ''[[Color TV-Game 15|Tennis B]]'' to appear. Quickly tapping down again when the minigame says “Ready” will allow the players to control it. *Holding Z while viewing the trophy collection will activate a secret "Trophy Hunt" minigame, added in v1.0.1. *Lucas' reveal in the Akaneia Build v0.9 release trailer mirrors his reveal in ''[[Super Smash Bros. 4]]'', with some differences such as Ganondorf replacing Bowser and Battlefield being swapped for Temple.
*In v0.9, Lucas, Charizard, and Sonic were unable to be used in [[Cruel Melee]]; the lattermost is especially ironic, given [[List of rumors#Sonic and Tails hoax|a widespread hoax that originated in ''Electronic Gaming Monthly'']] stating Sonic (and Tails) could be unlocked in ''Melee'' by that very mode. This was fixed in the next update.
**Several nods to the hoax in question have been made by the Akaneia Build team, primarily on social media. After the launch of v0.9, the team [https://twitter.com/teamakaneia/status/1645439137405718529 tweeted] an in-game screenshot replicating the image seen in the hoax, with Lucas replacing Tails. Leading up to the release of v1.0, the team tweeted photos of Sonic defeating various [[Fighting Wire Frames]], even asking if people were counting how many he had defeated. When [[Tails]] was added as a playable fighter in 1.0, his and Sonic's spots on the [[character selection screen]] would mirror those in the hoax, with Tails at the bottom left and Sonic at the bottom right.
