National flag on Bert's profile[edit]

I speak on behalf of Bert (well, I am Bert): Bert doesn't identify with their nationality, Germany. Bert understands that the flag is supposed to represent the country (nation) of the current location the player currently lives in (or whose scene the person is active in), and not the nationality. Bert supports this, as opposed to having things based on nationality (which is what some rankings/results reflect). However, even with the flags representing location, due to the fact that they mostly align with nationality, the presence of flags on rankings and results and other contexts such make discussions around nationality more present. Bert has experienced uncomfortable situations around their nationality in the Smash scene. Bert wishes to not have a national flag on their profile. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bert (talkcontribs) 17:13, March 3, 2025 (EST)

I don't understand what this request practically achieves. The purpose of the flags in results/rankings is a quick shorthand to immediately show what country's Smash scene each player is representing, which will be the country the player has resided in on a permanent (or at least long term) basis at the time of said tournament/ranking, regardless of whatever that player's particular feelings about their resident country may be. Censoring the flag next to your name is only needlessly obfuscating necessary information that anyone can already glean by looking at the results on your page, your start.gg account... or the information in your Smasher page that you're from Berlin, which you added to this page yourself. When it comes to information removal and censoring in our competitive coverage, the only compromise SmashWiki will make is personal information that isn't readily accessible nor is important info to a player's Smash career (e.g. real names, birth dates, and locations more precise than a country/state/province). Anything else is a hard line we will not cross, in the interest of having our information complete and cohesive, as well as to not complicate our competitive coverage by trying to implement and remember hundreds of exceptions for hundreds of different players that are liable to have their whims change at any time.
