''Smash Remix'' features all 12 characters from the original game without any changes, save for the addition of new alternate colors. Additionally, the player has the option to play as [[List of regional version differences (SSB)|regional variants of the characters]], with the only ones not present being Fox (Europe), Link (Australia) and Rondoudou (Jigglypuff's French variant from the PAL version of the original game). A random select button has also been added, something that would not be introduced into the main series until ''Brawl''.

A total of 18 new "Remix Characters" have been added, consisting of nine characters that originated in ''Melee'', {{SR|Ganondorf}}, {{SR|Young Link}}, {{SR|Falco}}, {{SR|Dr. Mario}}, {{SR|Bowser}}, {{SR|Mewtwo}}, {{SR|Marth}}, {{SR|Sheik}}, and {{SR|Peach}}; four from ''Brawl'', {{SR|Wario}}, {{SR|Wolf}}, {{SR|Sonic}}, and {{SR|King Dedede}}; one from ''Ultimate'', {{SR|Banjo & Kazooie}}; and four unique to ''Smash Remix'', {{SR|Conker}}, {{SR|Marina}}, {{SR|Goemon}}, and {{SR|Crash}}. In earlier versions, Remix Characters would completely replace the characters they were based on (Ganondorf replaced Captain Falcon, Young Link replaced Link, Falco replaced Fox, and Dr. Mario replaced Mario). This would be changed starting in Version 0.9 to allow players to use the original characters alongside the new ones. 

In addition to Remix Characters, "Bonus Characters" are also playable, consisting primarily of intentionally unbalanced boss characters, characters with more complex movesets than the rudimentary ones seen in base ''64'',<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6k-947QL0c Smash Remix 2.0 Overview — DarkHorse on YouTube]</ref> [[clone]]s, and characters that did not exist during the N64 era. Boss variants of existing characters are selected by highlighting the character they are based on and using the D-pad, including the originally unplayable {{SSB|Metal Mario}} and [[Giant Donkey Kong]], [[Fighting Polygon]] versions of the entire main cast, and newcomers {{SR|Metal Luigi}}, {{SR|Giga Bowser}},and {{SR|Super Sonic}}. The remaining bonus characters were also selected this way in previous versions, but were moved to a special menu accessed from the left margin of the character select screen beginning in 2.0.0. ==Stages==
''Smash Remix'' features 85 slots for stages spread across 5 pages on the stage selection screen (17 per page, 6x3 with the random stage select button at the bottom right), though many stages have alternate variants with different layouts or aesthetics that can be toggled with a button press. It also features two toggles for turning [[stage hazard]]s or platform movement off.

All nine of the original stages are included, along with new Omega and [[Dream Land]] variations for each one. Unlike [[Ω form]] and [[Battlefield form]] stages in the official titles, the [[stage hazard]] of each is still present if hazards are enabled. Omega stages keep the dimensions of Dream Land's main platform and blast zones as opposed to the N64 [[Final Destination]], owing to its abnormally high ceiling. Some stages also have one or two "remix" forms, alternate variations that cannot otherwise be classified. Several stages are included from across the official ''Smash'' series, while others are entirely original, and many come from series that are not represented in ''Remix'' by a playable character. Some of the stages originating from official ''Smash'' games (such as [[Green Hill Zone]]) feature similar aesthetics but significantly altered layouts, while others, like Raid Blue ([[Lylat Cruise]]), significantly change the aesthetics but keep the same layout as the original. Including all Omega, DL, and Remix stages, the mod features 144 total stages.

Several stages have special callbacks to their sources in their presentation. The ''Mario Kart 64'' stages and ''Big Blue'' have special countdown effects based on their original games at the beginning of a match. The Dragon King stages feature a unique HUD layout based on that of ''Dragon King: The Fighting Game'', while the ''Pokémon Stadium'' stages feature battle commentary from the announcer of ''Pokémon Stadium'' (voiced by {{s|bulbapedia|Ted Lewis}} through re-purposed voice clips); both features can also be optionally enabled on any stage.

Some stages have undergone visual or mechanical revisions between versions, including Great Deku Tree and Crateria beginning as Dream Land reskins before being given original layouts in version 1.4.0, Kitchen Island being updated from an asymmetrical [[Temple]]-style layout in version 0.9.7, and Dr. Mario being redone twice—once in version 0.9.2, and again in version 2.0.0. Five stages seen in earlier builds were later cut and replaced with new ones; the replacement stages retain the same layouts as the cut stages, but instead use aesthetics from era-appropriate games:

==Remix 1P Mode==
Remix 1P Mode plays out similarly to how the [[1P Mode]] does in the original game, but with the remix characters. Unlike 1P Mode, where each stage had the player facing the same opponents every time, however, the opponents are selected at random for each playthrough, much like the [[Classic Mode]]s in later Smash games. The player also fights Mad Piano, Super Sonic, or the {{SSB|Metal Mario}} [[Metal Luigi (SR)|Bros.]] in Stage 9 in place of just Metal Mario, and Giga Bowser in the final stage instead of {{SSB|Master Hand}}. ''Smash Remix'' includes over 300 new music tracks, including several never before featured in a ''Super Smash Bros.'' game. Due to the limited storage capacity of Nintendo 64 games, these tracks have all been converted to MIDI format and rearranged using the existing ''Smash 64'' sound fonts. Like games from ''Melee'' onwards, most stages have alternate music tracks that can play during battle, with some having up to four possible tracks. While these will play randomly with varying degrees of rarity, holding one of the C buttons while selecting a stage will cause the corresponding track to play; players can also switch to one of the other tracks mid-match by using the D-pad on the pause screen. Version 1.0.0 added the "song display" function introduced in ''Brawl'', which will display the name of a track and its original game at the start of a match. While most of these tracks can be heard in Vs. Mode, a few will only show up in special settings, such as a specific character's bonus stage or alternate tracks for the main menu.

Because of its quality of life improvements and inclusion of competition-friendly additional options, such as bug fixes and the ability to play timed stock battles, ''Smash Remix''{{'}}s most frequent presence in tournaments is to facilitate those for ''[[Smash 64]]'' itself. Because of its inclusion of stages that were originally locked to [[1P Game]], which normally require using a cheat device and run the risk of crashing due to instability, stages such as [[Meta Crystal]], [[Duel Zone]], and [[SYoshi|Mini Yoshi's Island]] have since seen infrequent use as legal stages in official ''Smash 64'' tournaments such as {{Trn|GENESIS 6}} and {{Trn|Smash 'N' Splash 5}}. [[Dream Land]] variants of other stages are also considered legal, particularly thanks to the ability to turn wind off on the original stage; the tournament stage select in ''Remix'' acknowledges this by featuring a page consisting solely of DL stages. Very select tournaments have allowed a few of ''Remix''{{'}}s original stages to be used, such as {{Trn|Frame Perfect Series 5: ONLINE}} allowing [[Smashville]], [[Yoshi's Story]] and [[Pokémon Stadium]]. The ability to easily play as ''Smash 64''{{'}}s boss characters, {{SSB|Metal Mario}} and {{SSB|Giant Donkey Kong}}, has also led to renewed discussion around their potential legality, though this has not yet resulted in any changes.

Beyond just being used for ''Smash 64'' tournaments ''Smash Remix'' itself has seen competitive play at various [[side events]]. The first tournament to hold a ''Remix'' event was {{Trn|Smashtoberfest}} in 2019, and the number has continued to grow since, with several tournaments continuing to feature ''Remix'' over multiple years of operation. Some notable tournaments to feature ''Remix'' include {{Trn|Super Smash Con 2023}}, {{Trn|Low Tier City DFW 2023}}, {{Trn|Frame Perfect Series 6: ONLINE}}, and multiple [[Tournament:Kirbstompd 8|Kirbstompd]] and  [[Tournament:Keystoned VII|Keystoned]] events. However, there is not yet a widely agreed-upon ruleset in terms of character bans, stage counterpicks, and so forth. While multiple Remix playtesters generally agree that the intentionally overpowered solo bosses in Remix 1P ({{SR|Giga Bowser}}, {{SR|Super Sonic}}, and {{SR|Mad Piano}}) should be blocked from use, there have been varying opinions throughout the team regarding other bonus characters, acknowledging that there is not yet enough data for a general consensus and discouraging any blanket bans on all bonus characters; as a result, any current decision regarding their legality ultimately falls to the individual [[TO]].

''Smash Remix'' contains various easter eggs and secrets hidden by the developers:
*When starting up Smash Remix, if the L button is held while the N64 logo is present, when the "Smash Remix is not to be purchased or sold." message appears, Ganondorf's laugh will play instead of the usual sound. If all four players hold down the L button, Wario's laugh will play instead.
*In 1P Game or Remix 1P, pressing Z on the second controller during the character select screen will allow the second player to control all opponents. A Master Hand laugh will play when the mode is triggered.
*When playing on the Great Bay stage, resetting a match will play the "{{iw|zeldawiki|Song of Time}}".
*When playing on the Smashville stage, fully rotating the camera on the pause screen and positioning it behind the small building will reveal an image of {{iw|nookipedia|Mr. Resetti}}. Similarly, doing so on the nighttime Remix variant will reveal an image of a ''Smash 4'' female {{SSB4|Villager}}.
*When playing on the Mad Monster Mansion stage, taunting in front of the flower pot will trigger a voice clip of it saying "Thank you."

*When playing on the Spawned Fear stage, when characters' damage exceeds 666%, they will be instantly KO'd if they touch the floor poison.
*In 12 Character Battle, using P1 and P2's character panels to spell "DK" will activate "DK Mode", which enlarges every character's heads and arms, in reference to the DK Mode in ''{{iw|wikipedia|GoldenEye 007|1997 video game}}''. Spelling "LK" will activate a similar "Lanky Mode", which enlarges characters' arms but shrinks their heads. These effects also affect hitboxes accordingly.
*In Training Mode, when manually switching the character through the custom menu, if one goes to the very last character, Sandbag will be listed, and selecting him will allow him to be played as. However, Sandbag can only do a limited number of actions, including moving, jumping, shielding, grabbing ledges, and taunting.
*In the Player Tags menu, inputting "afk" specifically in the second Name Tag slot will make matches in all VS Modes play automatically after selecting 2 or more characters. This also affects 1P Modes but all Bonus Stages will be Skipped. Break the Targets and Board the Platforms are considered as Failed while Race to the Finish is considered as successful and still award points.
*In the Player Tags menu, inputting any name in the last Name Tag slot will make Master Hand a playable boss character for Link.
*In the Player Tags menu, inputting "cube" in the eighth Name Tag slot will allow one to play as the blue cube Kirby from the original ''Smash 64'' {{SSB|debug menu}}, which originally needed a [[GameShark]] device to access.
*In the Music Settings menu, selecting the ''Super Mario 64'' menu music multiple times will eventually add a drum track to the theme.
*In the Music Settings menu, selecting the "Random ALL" option in the "Menu Music", then disabling all Random Music Toggles, next time the Menu Music playing will be the hidden Game Boy songs exclusive to the Game Boy Land stage, these being the following: Bubbly Clouds from ''Kirby's Dream Land'', Road to Cerulean City from ''Pokemon Red and Blue'', Stage 1 from ''Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3'' and Mabe Village from ''The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening''.
