'''Pit''' ({{ja|ピット|Pitto}}, ''Pit'') is a playable newcomer in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]''. He was revealed to be a playable character in ''Brawl's'' [[E3 2006]] trailer. 

Pit is voiced by Lani Minella (who also voices {{SSBB|Lucas}}) in the English version, and by Minami Takayama in the Japanese version.

Pit is ranked 17th on the [[tier list]], placing him at the bottom of the C tier, making for his best placement in the series even though he is overall more viable in ''Smash 4'' and ''Ultimate''. Pit possesses one of the best [[projectile]]s in ''Brawl'' with his [[Palutena's Bow]], as it is fast, chargeable, and can be steered to effectively cover the entire stage. Pit also has one of the best recoveries in ''Brawl'', possessing multiple [[midair jump]]s, a [[glide]], and ''Brawl''{{'}}s farthest-travelling and most maneuverable recovery move in [[Wings of Icarus]]. Additionally, Pit possesses fast attacks throughout his moveset, above average mobility and range, some of the strongest [[planking]] capabilities, and multiple effective anti-zoning tools.

Pit has problems with [[KO]]ing opponents, as he is a rather weak fighter who does not possess many finishers, and heavily relies on his [[back aerial]] and [[forward smash]] to KO (the former requiring a precise sweetspot, and the latter being heavily prone to [[SDI]] and [[stale-move negation]]. Additionally, Pit's recovery, despite its incredible distance and maneuverability, is vulnerable to [[gimp]]ing, as if Wings of Icarus is interrupted, he cannot use the move again until landing. Worst of all, Pit struggles heavily against [[Meta Knight (SSBB)|Meta Knight]], whose overpowering traits invalidate most of Pit's selling points while also being able to easily abuse his problematic recovery.

Overall, Pit has good [[matchup]]s, and while his representation and results are below average in American tournaments, they are much stronger [[Japanese tier list|in Japan]], where he is ranked 8th instead. While Pit has proven to be yet another victim of ''Brawl''{{'}}s stagnant metagame, the likes of {{Sm|Earth}} and {{Sm|KiraFlax}} have gone to great lengths to challenge this sentiment.

==Attributes==

Pit is a character who can play into many roles. He combines attacks well, can play up front with low lag smashes and multi-hit neutral attack moves (though his close-up game is impaired by poor range), moves relatively quickly, and has a respectable aerial game. Pit is easily juggled due to being a semi-floaty medium weight, but this also makes him difficult to chaingrab. Unique to Pit are two moves that reflect projectiles - his [[Mirror Shield]], which also protects Pit from many attacks, gives him [[armor]] while pulling it out and actually turns foes the opposite direction much like {{SSBB|Mario}}'s [[Cape]], giving him good gimping capabilities, and his Angel Ring, which is also good for racking up damage.

Pit's [[Palutena's Arrow]] is a great projectile due to its fast speed, long range, and quick start-up time (making it easily spammable). However, it is also easily [[perfect shield]]ed due to its fast speed, which makes it lose some of its usefulness. Pit can have only 4 arrows flying around at once. Once the player inputs the next arrow, the first one will disappear.

Pit has an advanced technique known as "[[wing dashing]]", which sends him flying forward a small bit. He also has one of the longest recoveries in the game, with three midair jumps, the fastest glide in the game, and an exceptional up special [[Wings of Icarus]]. However, should Pit get hit while using Wings of Icarus or attacks out of it, he cannot use it again until he lands onto the ground, grabs a ledge, or gets KO'd. Pit is the only character who cannot use their up special again if they are hit out of it.

Pit's moves generally have low lag, low knockback, and deal medium damage. This, however, is one of his greatest weaknesses. Due to [[stale-move negation]], continued use of his smashes can make KOing a difficult task, forcing the player to switch to projectile attacks to buff out smashes again. Pit's back aerial is his most powerful attack, which is a solid KO move due to its speed. Careful Pit players can maximize their potential while playing through their weaknesses, but it can be a difficult task.

==Role in [[The Subspace Emissary]]==

Pit starts off watching the stadium match between {{SSBB|Mario}} and {{SSBB|Kirby}} through a reflecting pool in a sky palace. After witnessing the invasion of the [[Subspace Army]] interrupting the match, the goddess [[Palutena]] summons him and sends him to attack the Subspace Army, providing him the [[Palutena Bow]]. He eventually meets finds Mario's trophy, after he was blasted out of the stadium by a cannonball. Pit revives Mario and the two of them join forces. The duo watch as an Arwing pursues the Halberd. As the two make their way to the ground and across a [[The Plain|Plain]], they chase after the [[Ancient Minister]] but fail to catch him. 

If the player rescued {{SSBB|Zelda}}, Pit and Mario would face off against a clone of her made from [[Shadow Bug]]s. {{SSBB|Link}}, who was passing by with {{SSBB|Yoshi}}, was furious because he thought that the copy of Zelda was the real thing so he and Yoshi attack Pit and Mario. When the player wins against Link and Yoshi, they are turned into trophies and are captured by {{SSBB|King Dedede}}. Luckily, Kirby revives Link and Yoshi, then Link fires an arrow at the cargo that King Dedede stole from {{SSBB|Wario}} to slow him down. Pit, Mario, Link, Yoshi and Kirby then team up to stop King Dedede.

If the player rescued {{SSBB|Peach}}, Link and Yoshi would attack a Shadow Bug clone of Peach, after which Mario and Pit would attack Link and Yoshi, but they would lose and turn into trophies. They then get captured by King Dedede but are rescued and revived by Kirby. Pit then fires an arrow at the [[cargo]] that King Dedede stole and the story continues. 

The five heroes come across King Dedede's castle, which has been raided by [[Bowser]]. The team catches up to Bowser, who has stolen the trophy of Peach/Zelda. Bowser dodges Mario's and Pit's attacks and escapes with the princess in his [[Koopa Clown Car]].

Much later, the team once again runs into the Ancient Minister in the [[The Wilds (Part II)|desert]]. Pit fires an arrow at the Minister but he dodges it. They then chase after the Minister but are stopped by a [[R.O.B. Squad]]. The R.O.B's then start to activate the [[Subspace Bomb]] that the Minister was carrying. Mario and Pit try to detach the R.O.Bs that are activating the bomb but are pulled away by two other R.O.B's. The team barely escapes when the bomb explodes. Later, the team comes down to help {{SSBB|Marth}}, {{SSBB|Ike}}, {{SSBB|Ice Climbers}}, {{SSBB|Lucas}}, and the {{SSBB|Pokémon Trainer}} from a huge army of Subspace minions.

Soon, Pit and the rest of the heroes storm into Subspace but are turned into trophies by [[Tabuu]]'s Off Waves. He is rescued later by {{SSBB|Ness}}, {{SSBB|Luigi}}, and {{SSBB|King Dedede}}. Afterwards, he helps the characters get through [[The Great Maze]] and participates in the battle against Tabuu himself.

==Trivia==
*Pit's original ''Brawl'' artwork portrayed him as having significantly more feathers on his wings; a narrower face; thicker, shorter legs; more tufts of hair; and white rings around his wrist as opposed to the golden ones on the ''{{SSBB|Smash Bros. DOJO!!}}'' image. He is one of three characters who originally had a different pose on ''Smash Bros. DOJO!!'', sharing this trait with {{SSBB|Snake}} and {{SSBB|Zero Suit Samus}}.
*Pit will carry his bow in two pieces if the last move he used required a sword; however, his dash attack is not affected by this, as it can be done with both his bow split into two or fully put together. This also applies to his spot dodge, air dodge and roll; in the case of his roll, however, it must be done quickly before his bow is fully formed via his shield animation.
*Occasionally Pit will utter "I'm done for..." ({{ja|遣られちゃった...|Yararechatta...}}, ''They got me...'') as his KO cry (a loose reference to the "Game Over" screen from ''Kid Icarus'', which reads: "I'm finished!").
*When Pit gets a Hammer/Golden Hammer, he does not swing his arms up and down, but only pivots his wrist. The animation is a reference to the his animation when using a mallet in ''Kid Icarus'' and its sequel, ''Of Myths and Monsters''. When Pit jumps while holding a hammer, he is posed very similarly to how he jumped in his original games.
*If Pit is holding an item, his bow will never be split. If he does his up or side taunt while holding an item, Pit will split his bow as normal, but the item will disappear during the taunt.
