Megavitamins are similar to [[Mario]]'s [[Fireball]]s in that they are a medium- to short-ranged projectile that bounces along the ground. However, they bounce higher, fall faster, do more damage (8%), and have distinctive sound effects from the original ''Dr. Mario'' upon firing, bouncing, and hitting; despite being a physical pill as opposed to a ball of flame, they can still be [[absorb]]ed. They are also used in Dr. Mario's [[taunt]] in ''Melee'', in which he tosses a non-damaging Megavitamin up and catches it. The color of each Megavitamin produced (each half can be red, yellow, or blue) is random and has no gameplay effect.

Megavitamins return in ''Super Smash Bros. 4''. They have been given a considerable damage nerf, only dealing 4% to 6% damage, but otherwise remain relatively unchanged. They also appear in Dr. Mario's side taunt, which was his taunt from ''Melee'', in which Dr. Mario tosses a non-damaging Megavitamin up and catches it. They received a slight buff as well; the game also now recognizes Megavitamins as physical projectiles, so they cannot be absorbed.

In the ''Dr. Mario'' series, {{iw|mariowiki|capsule}}s are used to eliminate {{s|mariowiki|virus}}es. When the player lines up four vitamins and/or viruses of the same color, the vitamins and the viruses are destroyed. In most ''Dr. Mario'' games, they appear in three colors; red, blue and yellow. 

The name of the move is a misnomer, with Megavitamins instead being a different type of medicine used exclusively in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Dr. Mario 64}}'', a game not released in Japan until after ''Melee'', which is reflected by the move being called the pill's official name (capsule) in the original Japanese version. In ''Dr. Mario 64'', Megavitamins are a magical medicine that can cure anyone using star power, and are capable of transforming Dr. Mario into [[Metal Mario]] and [[Wario]] into {{iw|mariowiki|Vampire Wario}}. Within the plotline of ''Dr. Mario 64'', Wario and {{iw|mariowiki|Mad Scienstein}} separately attempt to steal Mario's supply of Megavitamins, with the prior desiring to use them for monetary purposes, while the latter desires to cure his master {{iw|mariowiki|Rudy}} of a cold. In Mario's ending, he virtuously cures Rudy's cold despite him being evil; while in Wario's ending, he and Scienstein battle over the capsules, leaving the story on a cliffhanger.

*The Megavitamins trophy in ''Melee'' can be obtained before Dr. Mario is unlocked. Despite this, the Japanese version of its description mentions their role in Dr. Mario's moveset; this is not the case in the English version.
*The sound effect when a Megavitamin is thrown is the sound effect used in ''Dr. Mario'' when Megavitamins are lined up to clear them from the screen. The sound effect when a Megavitamin hits an opponent is the sound effect used in ''Dr. Mario'' when a Virus is eliminated by a Megavitamin.
