Based on - but officially a separate creature from - the [[Shellcreeper]] introduced in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Mario Bros.|game}}'', Koopa Troopas made their debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' as a common enemy, and has become a common enemy in later ''Mario'' games. Along with the [[Goomba]]s, the Koopa Troopas are some of the most recognizable enemies of the ''Mario'' series. They are anthropomorphic turtle-like creatures that are commonly seen in their green and red variations. The green Koopa Troopas are mostly known for walking in one direction until they are defeated or they fall, while the red Koopa Troopas move back and forth on platforms and turn around at ledges. [[Bowser]] is the king of the Koopa Troopas, much as [[Petey Piranha]] is the king of [[Piranha Plant]]s and {{s|mariowiki|Goomboss}} is the king of [[Goomba]]s. The name "Koopa Troopa" initially refered to an allegience to Bowser's [[Koopa Troop]], but is currently used as a name for the species as a whole, including friendly members.

Koopa Troopas are known for damaging the player on contact. If a Koopa Troopa is jumped on, they retreat into their shells rather than be defeated altogether, which can be kicked as projectiles. If the shells are left out for too long, however, the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of its shell. The kicked shells can also pose a danger if they bounce off of a wall. 

In ''{{s|supermariowiki|Super Mario Bros. 3}}'' and in later games onward, if a Koopa Troopa is jumped on and retreats into its shell, it can be picked up, carried around. This, however, can be dangerous, as the Koopa Troopa can emerge out of the shell while carried and can damage the player holding the shell. In ''[[Super Mario World]]'' and in later games onward, the Koopa Troopas appear walking on two legs instead of four, with the first ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Galaxy}}'' game briefly reviving the quadrupedal Koopa Troopa design. ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros.}}'' would introduce one of the most well-known traits of Koopa Troopas, breaking the fourth wall by dancing in time to vocal {{s|mariowiki|Paah}} samples in non-diegetic music, initially depicted as turning around twice but given a unique animation starting in ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros. Wii}}''.

Koopa Troopa is a recurring playable character in the ''{{s|mariowiki|Mario Kart}}'' series, having first appeared in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Kart}}'' and making near-consistent appearances from that point onwards. Koopa Troopa's absence in ''{{s|mariowiki|Mario Kart 64}}'' was given an in-universe explanation in Western promotional materials of [[Wario]] having stolen and repainted his kart.

Prominent members of the Koopa Troopa race include {{s|mariowiki|Kooper}}, one of [[Mario]]'s party members in ''{{s|supermariowiki|Paper Mario}}'', and {{s|mariowiki|Koopa the Quick}}, Mario's friendly rival in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 64}}''.

The Koopa Troopas have multiple subspecies, with the most famous being the winged [[Koopa Paratroopa]] and the undead {{s|mariowiki|Dry Bones}}.

Introduced during [[E3]] 2001, Koopa Troopas appear as a common enemy in the [[Mushroom Kingdom (Adventure Mode)|Mushroom Kingdom]] stage of [[Adventure Mode]].

Koopa Troopas walk back and forth, turn around at ledges, and hurt the player on contact. Dealing enough damage by attacking them or jumping on them forces them to retreat into their shells. If the shell is left alone or carried for too long, then the Koopa Troopas will emerge out of their shells. Koopa Troopas can be defeated by [[grab]]bing and [[throw]]ing the Koopa Troopa inside its shell, or by knocking it off a ledge, which will result in a Koopa KO bonus where the player receives 200 points for each Koopa Troopa KO'd.

Green Koopa Troopa shells can be grabbed, carried around, and thrown like the [[Green Shell]] item to KO other enemies or damage opponents. Red Koopa Troopa shells also function similarly to the green variation, but deals [[fire]] damage and stronger damage and knockback upon contact.
