Kazuya is currently ranked 7th out of 82 on the current tier list, placing him at the end of the S tier. Kazuya's biggest strength is his lethal combo game. He has many combo-starters, such as down-back tilt, Devil Fist, and most infamously, Electric Wind God Fist, being one of the best combo starters in the game due to its long hitstun. In addition, he has many powerful combo finishers, including up smash, Devil Wings, and Dragon Uppercut. Combined with a high overall damage output, this gives Kazuya one of the best punish games among the roster. Furthermore, his damage output is increased when Rage is activated, which not only increases his damage output but also grants him a stronger variant of Heaven's Door, Rage Drive. Finally, many of his attacks provide generous limb intangibility, giving him relative safety with contesting against attacks.

However, Kazuya suffers from several polarizing weaknesses, most notably his overall poor disadvantage state. His lack of aerial combo breakers and exploitable recovery means that he can easily get his advantage taken in the air. Almost all of his attacks come out on at least frame 12 and have very high ending lag, making most of his attacks unsafe on shield. His mobility is among the worst in the game, possessing bad ground speed excluding constant Crouch Dash use, and poor air speed coupled with the slowest jump squat in the game (coming out frame 7). His advantage state is also mediocre, as he primarily relies on landing combos to KO, having to win neutral again should his combo drop midway. Lastly, Rage also has its drawbacks, as it is lost after Kazuya takes enough damage, or too many uses of Rage Drive are attempted.

Overall, Kazuya is a unique fighter in Ultimate: mastering his unorthodox kit grants access to a hard-hitting ground offense with heavy punishment and comeback potential, akin to his appearance in Tekken, though his weaknesses in disadvantage mean that he must be careful with his playstyle. Despite his drawbacks, he still sees amazing results from players like Tea, Raki, and prior to his retirement, Riddles. Kazuya's overwhelming strengths, however, have led some to call for his ban, although this has not affected his legality outside of certain local regions.
