Forums: Index Proposals Sidebar menu suggestions/additions
FailedPolicy.png This is a closed discussion about a failed proposed change on SmashWiki. It remains for archival purposes.

Ok. I have been here long enough to know that... let's say a "progressive" sort of proposal gets shot down rather easily if it isn't fixing an issue. But hopefully people will see the potential benefits of this.

First off, it personally irks me that "navigation", "search", etc are all un-capitalized. This is a frivolous thing to say, but it's just my opinion. EDIT: Apparently a MediaWiki thing. All well.

Now let me get to the actual proposal. A new section should be added for the "competitive community". Unless one were to count tournament news, nothing on the main page nor the sidebar link to anything related to tournament play. It would be simple to create, too. It could list [competitive philosophy]], smasher, tournament, etc etc etc...

Regardless of your outlook on the topic, competitive subject articles give this wiki somewhat of an edge over other Smash information websites. Not to say it's a competition, but we cover both worlds of smash (competitive and the games themselves + orgins) very extensively and have an active community, among other things.

EDIT: If adding a competitive subsection to the sidebar seems like it's too much to someone, I'd like a thorough explanation as to why you think it is. I personally believe it is generally missing from the wiki where it should be.

Gonna do a piggyback here. If your main concern is to cover competitive games extensively, I'd have to argue that we should be including full bracket information in a subpage, along with match results. I say this because Liquipedia covers Melee, but not Smash 4. It's a stupid quality of life thing for the competitive side of gaming that I've been meaning to bring up for a while. Wouldn't be impossible to achieve for Smash 4 nationals either.
As for your suggestion, I'd have to recommend having it link to competitive philosophy. We'd have to expand it a bit to be a general hub for competitive gaming so that it had links to major tournaments and smashers if you ask me, but overall, it's the best starting page unless we want to make something new. Bracket images seem excessive to me when we can simply link to Challonge or other external sources for a lot of cases. As for the sidebar, I'm hesitant to include competitive things too heavily. I would be quite opposed to include it above the search bar, for example. Miles (talk) 13:28, 11 May 2016 (EDT)
Challonge doesn't bother with the character matchups specifically. Almost no website does except for the Liquipedia derivatives do. Even with that said, this is still a small quality of life thing that I only brought up now because of how conquerable it is at this moment in time, as opposed to the future.
As for the sidebar part, I'm fairly certain that a single bullet point isn't going to heavily ruin anyone's experience here. Honestly, the modes bullet point is arguably less useful than a competitive bullet point would be. MegaTron1Decepticon.png 16:33, 11 May 2016 (EDT)
The lowercase sidebar headers are a wiki standard, and I am not sure if it's possible to change them through MediaWiki, because if you look here, we have them capitalized. Serpent SKSig.png King 13:29, 11 May 2016 (EDT)

I do think it would be a good idea to involve the competitive scene in the sidebar somehow, but I think it would make more sense to just link to Tournament in the navigation. Nyargleblargle.pngNyargleblargle (Contribs) 14:47, 18 May 2016 (EDT)

I think that that'd be fine, considering that we talk about some metagame aspects on the character pages, along with some Smashers. MegaTron1Decepticon.png 17:48, 18 May 2016 (EDT)
