Article on Super Mario Wiki Luma (species)

Lumas (チコ, Chiko) are a species of creature from the Mario series. They appear in many different colors with the yellow ones being the most common. They are commonly seen alongside Rosalina.

Creature Description

Lumas are star-like creatures that have appeared in central roles in both Super Mario Galaxy games. They are friendly creatures who have the ability to transform into several different objects such as Launch Stars and Planets, they also can give abilities to other people, such as the ability to shoot star bits or to do a spin attack, as the main Luma does with Mario. Not much is known about the Lumas origins, however when they die they are reborn into new stars.

Lumas come in different shapes and sizes. The known variants are:

  • Yellow - The most common color. They can transform into Launch Stars or Sling Stars.
  • Red - Red Lumas hold the power of Red Stars, which allow Mario to fly and attract objects towards him.
  • Blue - Blue Lumas can transform into Pull Stars.
  • Green - Green Lumas tell the player about the three trial galaxies. After obtaining three green stars, three more appear on a planet near the Comet Observatory. If one is talked to, it asks the player if he or she would like to visit the galaxy that the Luma launches the player to. If the player answers yes, the green Luma turns into a launch star that brings the player to the respective galaxy.
  • Apricot - Only one apricot colored Luma is known, being the Luma (named Luma) who assists Mario throughout Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  • Dark Brown - Only one dark brown Luma is known, being Polari, who is Rosalina's advisor.
  • Pink - Pink Lumas, known as Hungry Lumas, are slightly larger than normal Lumas, and, unlike other Lumas, have mouths. They hold Star Bits on sticks and can be fed several Star Bits to transform.
  • Purple - Two purple Lumas have been shown in the series, who both have vastly different appearances. The first is the Prankster Comet Luma (also known as Lumacomète), who has the same appearance as a Hungry Luma, with yellow eyes, a blue mouth, and two points on top of his head instead of one. Also, instead of holding two Star Bits, he holds two star outlines on sticks. The other known purple Luma is Lubba, the captain of the Starship Mario. Lubba is a similar size as Hungry Lumas, but has a smaller face located higher on his body, blue eyes, and wears blue pants. He also has a pink ball on top of his head.
  • Turquoise - Lumalee is the only known turquoise Luma. Lumalee runs a shop and is often located nearby boss areas, where he gives Mario the choice of buying a 1-Up Mushroom or a Life Mushroom before transforming into the one Mario chooses. He also appears inside of the Starship Mario, where he allows Mario to roll a die to win 1-Up Mushrooms, Coins, or Starbits.
  • Orange - Orange Lumas are also known as Co-Star Lumas. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario teams up with a Co-Star Luma, who can be controlled by player 2. Another Co-Star Luma appears on the Starship Mario, explaining how it works. These are the only two orange Lumas known to appear in game.
  • Giant - Giant yellow Lumas debuted in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are basically much larger yellow Lumas, being even bigger than Mario and Rosalina.

As a playable character

The Lumas fight alongside Rosalina as newcomers in Super Smash Bros. 4. They function similarly to Pikmin, but can fight on their own, similar to the Ice Climbers. They come in six colors; yellow, green, blue, red, apricot, and dark brown.

Trophies

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions

Lumas do not have any trophies of them alone, although they share several trophies with Rosalina.

Rosalina & Luma
The mysterious Rosalina lives in the Comet Observatory with the Lumas. She first traveled with them in search of their mother. In Smash Bros., Rosalina and Luma can fight in different places at the same time. If you can trap someone between Rosalina and Luma, you'll be able to unleash incredible damage!
Rosalina & Luma (Alt.)
Rosalina can pull in items and projectiles around her with her Gravitational Pull move. Her up special Launch Star is a diagonal jump and, though harmless, it has exceptional range. You also have some control over Rosalina's trajectory when she uses it.
