Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), returns as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it is now a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

Changes from Brawl

• Back throw deals slightly more damage, and has strengthened a little.
• Down aerial is stronger, and deals 1% more damage. It has also been sped up a bit.
• Fly grants much more vertical distance.
• Back aerial is stronger.
• Foward smash has a new animation and is stronger.
• Charizard has a new forward aerial attack that involves scratching forward, similar to Bowser's forward aerial.
  • It deals slightly less damage.
• Forward tilt deals less damage.
• Down smash has an altered animation.
• Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special, replacing Pokémon Change.
• Charizard's new side special is Flare Blitz, which has been described as a very powerful attack. It turns into a fireball and shoots sideways, but will inflict recoil damage on Charizard if it makes contact with an opponent, similar to how it acted in the games.
• Charizard has a new up throw, where it brings its opponent into the air and crashes them into the ground, similarly to Kirby's up throw. Possibly based on Seismic Toss.
  • It deals less damage.
• Charizard's new Final Smash has been confirmed to be Mega Charizard X.

• The following moves appear visually unchanged:
  • Neutral attack
  • Forward smash
  • Neutral aerial
  • Flamethrower
  • Up taunt
  • Down taunt

Special Moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but none of Charizard's have been seen. It retains three of its original special moves. Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special as a replacement for Pokémon Change. Flare Blitz is its new side special. Its final smash Triple Finish has been replaced by mega evolving into Mega Charizard X. These are Charizard's special moves:

Trivia

• Charizard is the only veteran to receive an introduction image that did not use its official artwork.
• Ike, Lucario, Peach, Charizard, King Dedede, and Diddy Kong were the only returning characters confirmed before E3 2014 to not be playable in any demo version of Super Smash Bros. 4.
