| The current range blocks are /20, which blocks a total of 4096 IPs (2 to the power of [32 minus the number]). This is generally the point at which I personally say "this is good enough"; every increase of the range number by 1 doubles the amount of blocked IPs. The default MediaWiki limit is /16 (65,536 IPs), which basically means "the first two numbers of the IP address are the same, who cares about the second two". I would normally point you to [https://tools.wmflabs.org/blockcalc/ the rangeblock tool] and ask "what would your new range be?", but it seems to be down at the moment.
