The glitch can be performed by using the following method:

Once in Melee mode, players in Custom Rules select [[Stock]] mode and set the number of stocks to anything. They should select one and only one character. Then, they can perform the glitch as follows:
The glitch can be executed only in Time, Bonus, or Coin modes; [[Stock mode]] causes a [[0-Second Melee]]. Players may set the time to whatever they wish. Next, place the cursor of the controller over the name field on the character select screen. On this controller, press [[A]] and [[B]] simultaneously. Release A, but hold onto B. Scroll down to the "Name Entry" button. If the player presses A again at just the right time, the game will skip to the Stage Selection screen. Select the stage. If it loads properly, the game has not frozen and the player will be in a Single Person Melee. The window of time to execute the glitch is 1 frame.

#The player should scroll down to "Name Entry." Then, the player should press A at the correct time whilst still holding B.
#If this is timed correctly, the player will go to the Stage Select screen. Select a stage.

If the player performed the glitch correctly and the game does not freeze, the Melee will end as soon as the announcer says, "Go!"

Players can also perform this glitch with two to four characters all on the same team (using the [[black character glitch]]) instead of only one player. The match will end instantaneously due to there being only one team remaining (or in this case, starting the match).

Single Person Melee is a form of the Name Entry glitch that allows the player to play alone. It was discovered by REVOLUTION324 and Exchord92.

Executing the glitch

The glitch can be executed only in Time, Bonus, or Coin modes; Stock mode causes a 0-Second Melee. Players may set the time to whatever they wish. Next, place the cursor of the controller over the name field on the character select screen. On this controller, press A and B simultaneously.

Explanation

Under normal circumstances, it is impossible to advance with only one combatant. However, since the Name Entry glitch forces the game to advance, there is only one character in the melee. It will remain this way until time has run out or until the player quits.
