Metroid (メトロイド, Metoroido) is the first game in the Metroid series of video games. It was released first for the Famicom Disk System on August 6, 1986, and later for the Nintendo Entertainment System in August 1987 (North America) and on January 15, 1988 (Europe).

Password system

The Nintendo Entertainment Systemversion of Metroid was one of the first games to use the password system to save game information. It worked like the password system in [[Kid Icarus], while the Famicom Disk System used battery-backed memory to save game information, like The Legend of Zelda. Two special codes were discovered by players, using password generators. They are Justin Bailey an Narpas Sword.

Justin Bailey

Using Justin Bailey, the play can control Samus with almost all of her up-grades (the Morphing Ball, the Varia Suit, the Hi-Jump Boots, the Screw Attack, the Wave Beam, five Energy Tanks and 255 Missiles). Both Ridley and Kraid are defeated, but the player must find the Ice Beam to clear the game, being it needed to deafeat the Metroid nera the final boss, Mother Brain. But real differential in this password is control Armorless Samus, using a Purple leotard, instead of her famous Power Suit.

Many People think this code is the only way to use use Armorless Samus, but is that not true, considering Armorless can de a Bonus in the Nintendo Entertainment System version, once the game was cleared under three hours. Justin Bailey was initially thought to be the name of one of the creators of the game, but that name doesn´t appear in the credits of the game. Many other people think Justin Bailey is an abreviate form of the phrase "Just in a Bailey", considering Armorless Samus wear some type of swimsuit.

Narpas Sword

This code was recently discovered and was purposefully built-in to the game, not will check with password generators:

NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000

Using this code, Samus starts the game with infinite energy and missiles, being equipped with the Ice Beam. All the other up-grade are avaible too, less the Wave Beam. Using this password, Ridley and Kraid aren´t defeated yet.

A interest fact in this password, is the Ice Beam sprite: It will be different for the one used in the regular gameplay.

This sprite is like the Wave Beam sprite, but with diferent color. This sprite can be used too, if the player imput a password generated in special programs, when both Wave and Ice Beam ere selected.

Many people wonder what is the meaning of this code. One of the speculation is "Narpas´s Word", but it can mean "NAR Password" too, consedering "Nar" is the abbreviate form of Tohru Narihiro, who handled the password system in this game, an acronym for "North American Release"; or an acronym for "Not A Real", as in "Not A Real Password".

Super Smash Bros. series

Samus Aran, the game's main character and silent protaganist, is and will be a playable character in all three Super Smash Bros. games. Also, the theme for "Brinstar" can be heard on the Planet Zebes stage in Super Smash Bros. and on the Brinstar stage for Super Smash Bros. Melee. In addition, the theme for the area "Kraid" is remixed in the stage, Brinstar Depths.
