Cruel Melee is a mode found in Super Smash Bros. Melee under the Multi-Man Melee section. The mode is unarguably the most challenging, as the opponents will be immensely hard compared to the enemies of the other Multi-Man Melee modes.

The amount of enemies each character kills can be found on Cruel Melee's character select screen.

Rewards

If you are capable of killing five or more of the Cruel Melee enemies with a single character, then you'd come in possession of the Mr. Resetti trophy.

Cruel Brawl

Cruel Brawl, which is the name of this mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, plays very similar to Cruel Melee. Unlike Cruel Melee, however, the Fighting Wire Frames are replaced by the Alloys, which mimic the characters Mario, Kirby, Zelda, and Captain Falcon. The alloys do not have their special moves, however, which makes them slightly easier to knock out than if they were the characters themselves, as they have little ability to recover using recovery moves.

The reward in Brawl for KOing 5 Alloys is the Red Alloy trophy. If you KO 10 Alloys, you unlock the Liquid Snake sticker.
