==Origin==

Yuri is the central protagonist of ''Maiden of Black Water'', the fifth main entry in the ''Fatal Frame'' franchise. She's a 19-year-old woman who survived a car accident that killed her whole family; because of the accident, she developed a "Sixth Sense." This ability allows her to see ghosts. Throughout the game, she helps the other protagonists in solving strange cases around Mt. Hikami, a notoriously haunted location in the outskirts of Japan. Yuri is led to Mt. Hikami by her sixth sense and travels around the area and back, taking photographs of spirits with her [https://fatalframe.fandom.com/wiki/Camera_Obscura Camera Obscura], a specialized camera that can take photographs and exorcise ghosts.

While the Camera Obscura's crosshair is based on the one that appears on the Wii U's GamePad or on the screen (depending on the set control scheme) and the ghostly wails are loosely based on the sound effects ghosts play when damaged in ''Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water'', the grainy effects and inverted colors seem to only be referencing her home series's status as a camera-oriented horror game.

Interestingly, the image in the background image is taken from the game's prologue drop, specifically the image displayed before the drop begins.

Yuri appears as an [[Assist Trophy]] in ''Ultimate''. When summoned, she says "{{ja|なに？|Nani?}}" (''What?'') and aims her Camera Obscura at fighters and takes a picture; the flash momentarily stuns any fighters caught within the Viewfinder, leaving them vulnerable, and inflicts them [[poison]] damage, even after she disappears. If a fighter is within the Viewfinder, they can avoid the Camera Obscura's effects by [[shield]]ing during the camera flash. Yuri disappears after taking three photographs. She cannot appear on 3D Land, Big Blue, Brinstar, Corneria, Dream Land GB, Flat Zone X, Frigate Orpheon, Golden Plains, Midgar, Minecraft World, Mushroomy Kingdom, Mute City SNES, Onett, Pac-Land, Rainbow Cruise, Spiral Mountain, Venom, WarioWare, Inc., and Wii Fit Studio.

Yuri appears as one of the game's collectible [[spirit]]s. In her Spirit Battle, she appears as an Assist Trophy while {{SSBU|Zelda}} acts as her puppet fighter.

Yuri also appears as a hostile Assist Trophy in the Spirit Battles for Reporter & Wrestler, where she fills in the role of the Reporter; Mio & Mayu Amakura, due to being from the ''Fatal Frame'' series; and Toy-Con VR Goggles, with her Camera Obscura's Viewfinder representing the goggles.

*Yuri's appearance in ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'' marks the first time a character from the horror genre appears in some capacity outside of being a trophy.
*Yuri is the first Assist Trophy from a non-playable universe to hail from a game with a D (17+) rating from the CERO, an M (Mature) rating from the ESRB, and an 18+ rating from PEGI.
*Despite ''Maiden of Black Water'' receiving an English dub, Yuri is only voiced in Japanese in ''Ultimate'', with her using recycled voice clips from the Japanese version of ''Maiden of Black Water''.
**This makes her one of six characters to have a known English voice actor yet not be voiced in English in ''Ultimate'', with the others being [[Mewtwo]], [[Takamaru]], [[Hero|Luminary]], [[Cloud Strife]], and [[Sephiroth]].
