Sonic[edit]
Someone recently added a section regarding a ban for Sonic. However, I don't really agree with adding this in the first place.
- For the most part, the "ban" was more so for a gimmick rather than any serious ban. For example, See Me In Ultimate 71 banned Sonic for only one event, and was part of a series of bans for several characters each week, such as Zelda and Ness in subsequent weeks. Same as Sonic is Banned, which to me really just seems like a tournament banning a character for fun rather than any serious ban. I don't know enough about Lights Out's online events, but from a glance it also doesn't look like the ban is serious, at least for now. Nevertheless, these events are basically the same as when Texas banned R.O.B. for one of their weeklies.
- A lot of information in this section is really only surrounding a brief period of time where most players disliked Sonic, not necessarily because of the character himself, but because of how the online metagame sucked. This was around the time "#FixUltimateOnline" became a big thing, as well as ways to combat the crappy online netcode, such as region locks, becoming a thing. Sonic is really just a byproduct of this issue.
- The two videos you linked were specifically regarding Sonic in the online metagame, despite these videos being located in a section on Sonic's offline reputation.
- Most importantly, outside of the linked events, there has been no evidence for any serious discussion regarding a Sonic ban. People don't like the character, but no one has actually advocated for a ban aside from as a joke or a gimmick event. The entire section, as it stands right now, really just shows that Sonic is not a character people like watching; nothing here actually states any legitimate reason for Sonic ban aside from "not fun to watch", which again can be applied to many other characters. An example of this is what you linked regarding Coinbox and Hungrybox's contemplations, and the following Tweet showed many people either disagreeing with the choice to ban Sonic, or making jokes about it, and again this was more so a byproduct of the online metagame being crappy, because it was the same year Hungrybox launched "To-Go Box" that experiment with alternate rulesets in order to counteract burnout. Basically, these contemplations are, overall, minor compared to the legitimate discussions that Steve, Kazuya, and Hero had.
These are basically my thoughts, from what the section had. Cookies
