Brawlback is an ongoing project that aims to port the features of Project Slippi into Super Smash Bros. Brawl and several of its modifications. The project is being directed by WhiteTPoison with major contributions from PiNE and Kapedani.

History[edit]

Prior to the official launch of the project, work had begun on developing certain aspects of what would eventually become Brawlback, albeit with infrequent updates. On October 22nd, 2021, a Project+ replay recorder would be released by Kapedani that featured the ability to automatically record in-game replays through OBS Studio. On November 18th, 2021, a tweet posted by BlueZone would spark interest in the community in financially supporting development of rollback netcode for Project+.[1][2] Following this event, the project would be officially launched a day later.[3] The name "Brawlback" wouldn't be used until a poll was ran determining the name of the project on December 3rd, 2021.[4]

An early proof-of-concept of rollback netcode was published to Twitter on December 5th, 2021 by PiNE.[5] This concept was noted to be "very very inconsistent and unoptimized". A later update on February 13th, 2022, would demonstrate genuine rollback netcode working in Project+ albeit with latency due to unoptimized savestates.[6] A Patreon for the project was published later that day.[7]

On May 10th, 2022, a matchmaking beta would be released to Patreon supporters of the project.[8] This release would garner over 1,700 followers for the project's Twitter account and over 260 patrons on Patreon totaling up to over $1,600.
