The '''Slant Paralyzer''' ({{ja|スラントパラライザー|Suranto Pararaizā}}) is [[Zero Suit Samus]]'s [[down smash]]. The move is unusual in that, despite being a [[smash attack]], the move has functionally no [[KO]] power. Instead, it's one of the few moves in the entirety of the ''Smash Bros.'' series that is able to inflict the [[Paralyze]] effect. This makes the move an amazing [[combo]] starter in every title it has appeared in, even in ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'', where fighters are notoriously difficult to combo due to the universal mechanic of [[hitstun canceling]].

==Overview==
Zero Suit Samus does a 180° degree twirl on one leg, puts the other leg back down, and aims her {{IW|metroidwiki|Paralyzer}} at a ~30° angle diagonally downward, before firing. Any fighter caught in the blast will be [[paralyze]]d, leaving them open to a follow-up hit from Samus. Being hit by an additional down smash immediately after being paralyzed will have no additional effect in ''Brawl'' and ''Smash 4'', providing no utility except as a way to rack up damage, but will knock back the target the appropriate amount in ''Ultimate'', giving the move ''some'' KO potential.

''Slant Paralyzer'' in ''Brawl'' is one of the best combo starters in the game, if not the best. This is because it's one of only two moves in the entire game that can inflict the Paralyze effect in a competitive setting, the other being her {{mvsub|Zero Suit Samus|SSBB|neutral special}} (with the exception of Kirby's copy ability). As mentioned above, this makes it a very potent combo starter in a game where combos are notoriously difficult to come across. This property, combined with the move's [[disjoint]], makes it a very strong [[edgeguarding]] tool. In addition, it's even more useful against fast-fallers, against whom the move can be chained together multiple times; against Fox, in particular, the move can even lead to a [[zero-to-death]].

===In ''[[Super Smash Bros. 4]]''===
The move behaves much the same as it did in ''Brawl''; notable follow-ups include forward smash, a grab, or Boost Kick. With precise timing off-stage, it can also be used as a set-up into Flip Jump in order to meteor smash an opponent. At 60%-150%, two consecutive uncharged down smashes can lead into ZSS's forward aerial, reverse aerial rushed back aerial, up aerial, Flip Jump, and Boost Kick. However, these particular follow-ups require precise timing and for ZSS to be very close to the opponent. Like Mewtwo and Ryu's down smashes, it only hits on one side.

In ''Ultimate'', ''Slant Paralyzer'' was changed so that it now puts Zero Suit Samus through hitlag as well the victim. This reduces the move's combo potential slightly and safety against shields by a wide margin.

==Origin==
In ''{{s|metroidwiki|Metroid: Zero Mission}}'', after crash landing on ''Zebes'', Samus is left without her power armor and her ''Emergency Pistol'' as her only means of defense. Firing upon the space pirates, when fully charged, deals no damage and instead stuns them in place, leaving Samus enough time to get away and hide. It would later reappear in {{s|metroidwiki|Metroid: Other M}}, where it would be renamed to the ''Paralyzer'' (although it is worth noting that this was after the release of ''Brawl'', marking the ''Smash Bros.'' series the first instance of Samus's pistol being referred to as the Paralyzer).

The likely inspiration for making her pistol a down smash, in addition to it being her neutral special, comes from the  ability to manually aim in the 2D ''Metroid'' games in 8 directions by pressing '''↑''' or '''↓''' on the [[D-pad]] and a [[shoulder button]] ('''L''' or '''R''') to aim diagonally. More specifically, in ''Zero Mission'', players can aim Samus's pistol diagonally downwards by holding '''↓''' and '''L''' simultaneously, which looks vaguely like the animation for Slant Paralyzer.
