GENESIS 8 was the largest offline Melee tournament by entrants since GENESIS 4 in January 2017, and the largest offline Ultimate tournament by entrants since Super Smash Con 2019 in August 2019.
Summary of events
Melee
GENESIS 8 became most well-known for Jmook's breakout run all the way to 2nd place; seeded 21st and fairly unknown on the world stage, Jmook tore through winners' bracket and defeated Plup, LloD, n0ne, and iBDW, only losing to champion Zain in winners' and grand finals. Jmook's run was seen as arguably solo Sheik's best tournament performance ever at the time, made more impressive by his victories over Plup and iBDW, two players with historically dominant records over Sheik players. Jmook's run is often regarded as the greatest breakout performance in Melee history, due to the fact that he had never ranked top 100 on a Melee global power ranking prior.
Mang0 was famously upset by Fizzwiggle outside of top 64, before being eliminated by Hungrybox for 9th, his lowest ever placing at a GENESIS tournament. With Hungrybox's 5th placing, this was the first open bracket supermajor for Melee since Viva La Smashtaclysm (nearly 15 years prior) to not have any of the Five Gods in grand finals.
Ultimate
The top 3 for Ultimate were the same players as the ones in Delfino Maza RETA 2022 (MkLeo, Glutonny and Sparg0) approximately two weeks prior. This tournament also stands as Tweek's worst placement at an Ultimate tournament, tying Smash 'N' Splash 5 with a 33rd place finish.
Due to the venue having a hard cutoff at 10:00 p.m. before paying staff for overtime, the Ultimate doubles Grand Finals reset was played offstream.

*raoul flew from France to San Francisco, California on January 14th, 2022 to arrive early before the tournament's original dates of January 28th-30th, 2022. *This tournament stands as Tweek's worst placement at an Ultimate tournament, tying Smash 'N' Splash 5 with a 33rd place finish.
*This is the first major Melee tournament to have only one spacie player in Top 8 (iBDW with Fox) since MELEE-FC3 (Dave with Falco) almost 17 years prior.

**Both Top 8s interestingly had two Peach players; MELEE-FC3 had Sastopher and KrazyJones, while GENESIS 8 had lloD and Kalamazhu.
**Both tournaments were ultimately won by a Marth player (Ken for MELEE-FC3, Zain for GENESIS 8).
**Standing the test of time, ChuDat and Drephen were also in attendance for both tournaments.
*Although AndresFn and Vendetta's exhibition FT5 was for the symbolic title of best shoto player in Ultimate, both finished 97th in bracket and were significantly outplaced by Ikan, who used only Ryu on route to a 9th place finish. This spawned numerous jokes (in which both players took part) about Ikan being the one true shoto master.

*This is the first GENESIS tournament where Mango did not place in Top 8, having been sent to loser's bracket in Round 2 pools by Fizzwiggle before being eliminated from the tournament by Hungrybox for 9th place.
*This is the first tournament that Lord has attended since EVO 2016.
*Prior to Sparg0 vs. Zomba in Top 8 of Ultimate, a video was played announcing Sparg0's sponsorship by FaZe Clan, with Sparg0 subsequently removing his hoodie to reveal a FaZe jersey.

*The brackets for both Ultimate and Melee were won by players using characters exclusively from the Fire Emblem series.
*The top 3 for Ultimate were the same players as the ones in Delfino Maza RETA 2022 (MkLeo, Glutonny and Sparg0) approximately two weeks prior.
*This is the first GENESIS tournament where Mario was successfully utilized to win a set in Top 64, with ChuDat using the character in 2 of the 3 games he won against Ben (who typically counterpicks Ice Climbers with Luigi) to win the set.
*n0ne's winner's semifinals set with Jmook marked the lowest seed combination (17th and 21st seeds, respectively) for a Top 8 set at a Melee supermajor.
*n0ne's winner's semifinals set with Jmook marked the lowest seed combination (17th and 21st seeds, respectively) for a Top 8 set at a Melee supermajor.
*During the Loser's Eighths set between Hungrybox and lloD in Top 8, lloD pulled every single possible item for Peach's Vegetable to spawn in-game.
*Jmook's historic run all the way to 2nd place marks:
**the first time an unsponsored player made it to Grand Finals at a GENESIS tournament since GENESIS 2.
**the lowest seeded player to make it to Grand Finals at a GENESIS tournament (21st seed).
**the lowest seeded player to make it to Grand Finals at a Melee major since  Bombsoldier (who was unseeded) at Jack Garden Tournament.
**the highest placement at a Melee supermajor for a player never ranked on a global Super Smash Bros. Melee power ranking.
* This is the first open bracket supermajor for Melee since Viva La Smashtaclysm (nearly 15 years prior) to not have any of the Five Gods in Grand Finals (or even Top 3), with Hungrybox and Mango finishing 5th and 9th, respectively.
