'''Apex 2016''' was the seventh edition of the {{Trn|Apex}} series, which took place from June 17th to June 19th of 2016.<ref>[https://twitter.com/apex_series/status/691697031467896832 Apex 2016 dates]</ref> Apex 2016 was the first Apex event to be run under the new management of the Bifuteki crew, following {{Sm|Alex Strife}}'s removal from the team in 2015.

Although {{Trn|Apex 2015}} had previously featured among [[List_of_largest_Smash_tournaments|the largest ''Smash 64'', ''Melee'', ''Brawl'', and ''Smash 4'' tournaments in history]], Apex 2016 featured a precipitous drop in attendance compared to its predecessor; this can potentially be attributed to controversies surrounding the tournament series starting with Apex 2015, as well as poor scheduling due to {{Trn|Low Tier City 4}}, {{Trn|DreamHack Summer 2016}}, and {{Trn|Snosa II}} all being scheduled for the same weekend as Apex 2016. Compared to Apex 2015, ''Smash 64'' fell from 188 entrants to 55 entrants, ''Melee'' notably went from 1,037 entrants to only 159 entrants, ''Smash 4'' fell from 837 entrants to 309 entrants, and the ''Brawl'' event was completely cancelled due to poor turnout. The poor attendance extended to games outside of ''Smash'', with ''{{s|wikipedia|Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3}}'', ''{{iw|wikipedia|Killer Instinct|2013 video game}}'', and ''{{s|wikipedia|Mortal Kombat X}}'' all having their respective events cancelled. Nevertheless, several top Japanese players, specifically {{Sm|Nietono}}, {{Sm|RAIN}}, and {{Sm|Umeki}}, travelled to Apex to compete in the ''Smash 4'' event.
