{{pkmn|Staryu}} is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation I}}, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #120 as the "Star Shape Pokémon". It evolves into [[Starmie]] by using a Water Stone, and it is one of {{iw|bulbapedia|Misty}}'s Pokémon both in the games and the animated series.

{{iw|bulbapedia|Swift|move}} is a special Normal-type move with 60 base power and perfect accuracy, which Staryu can learn naturally in every game.

Between ''Melee'' and ''Smash 4'', Staryu's voice clips came from episodes of the ''Pokémon'' anime. One from ''The Water Flowers of Cerulean City'' was used in the Japanese versions of ''Melee'' and ''Brawl'' and every version of ''Smash 4''. A different one from ''Bye Bye Psyduck'' was used in the non-Japanese versions of ''Melee'' (except the French version, which has a different clip) and ''Brawl''.

Melee'' out of [[Poké Ball]]s, replacing [[Starmie]] from ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'' Once released it flies around looking for an opponent to target, and upon finding it it remains stationary and attacks with Swift, shooting a stream of stars that deal 1%. Its attack can be easily DI'd out of. Touching Staryu while it's attacking also deals 13% damage.

*Staryu is one of two Poké Ball Pokémon to replace a member of their evolution-line in later installments, the other being [[Weezing]].
*Staryu replaced its evolved form [[Starmie]] from ''Melee'' onwards, because it was most likely based on {{iw|bulbapedia|Misty's Staryu}} from the [[bulbapedia:Pokémon anime|''Pokémon'' anime]]. {{iw|bulbapedia|Misty|anime}} used to have both Pokémon on her team at the time of ''Smash 64'', but she only had Staryu since she had left her Starmie at her gym before ''Melee'' was released.
