Shawnzo is a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pikachu from Rhode Island, known for his campy, Thunder Jolt-heavy playstyle and his polarizing presence in the local scene.
Playstyle[edit]
Shawnzo's Pikachu is defined by safe, passive, and aerial-heavy play, heavily utilizing Thunder Jolt to control the pace of the game. He is not afraid to time opponents out if necessary and is one of the most ledge-trump-heavy Pikachu players in the scene. The roots of his campy approach trace back to Shine 2023, where G-XREME beat him in an amateur bracket, inspiring him to refine his playstyle into a defensive fortress.
Despite experimenting with Steve and Aegis, he remains committed to Pikachu, the character that has consistently brought him success. His strongest matchups include Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Terry, King K. Rool, and R.O.B., while he struggles against sword characters and Mr. Game & Watch.
Tournament history[edit]
Shawnzo’s journey began in 2020, exclusively competing in online tournaments. His first recorded tournament was MHEL Smash Ultimate Weeklies #27 on May 4, 2020, but it was in Stale Moves #8 on June 13, 2020, where he secured his first tournament victory. While he showed promise, college and other commitments put his Smash career on hold, keeping him out of competition until April 23, 2023, when he returned at Survive Revival 59 ARCADIAN in Providence, Rhode Island. This was the turning point, setting the stage for his true debut at the superregional Shine 2023, where he placed 65th — an achievement he considers the official start of his competitive career.
