He is widely considered to be one of the greatest ''Ultimate'' players of all time, being considered the best in the world in 2023, the first half of 2024, and 2024 overall, having never been ranked lower than 4th since his debut, and having won over 20 {{SSBU|major}}s throughout his career. He is also considered to be the greatest {{SSBU|Steve}} player of all time and was the first Steve player to win a major.

He was initially known as one of the best players on [[Smashmate]], becoming the first player on the ladder to achieve a 2,500 rating. He gained a worldwide spotlight in the 2022 season due to his impressive consistency as a player, with many comparing him to {{Sm|MkLeo}}; up until {{Trn|Maesuma Offline (Shikoku)}}, he made Grand Finals at every offline tournament he attended, including winning his first supermajor at {{Trn|Maesuma TOP 7}} and his first major and overseas tournament at {{Trn|The Gimvitational}}. He is not only one of the youngest players to win a major, doing so at the age of 15, but is also the only ''Ultimate'' player to win the first major and supermajor that they attended. In addition, he has only placed outside the top 8 at three ranked events, and holds the second-longest top 8 streak in ''Ultimate'' history, behind MkLeo. Among his tournament titles include three {{Trn|Kagaribi|series}} events, including {{Trn|Kagaribi 13}}, the largest ''Ultimate'' tournament of all time in terms of top-level talent; and the premier American supermajor {{Trn|Super Smash Con 2023}}. Outside of Steve, he has shown proficiency over a variety of other characters, most notably the {{SSBU|Aegis}} and {{SSBU|Mr. Game & Watch}}, both of whom he frequently uses as a counterpick against players who he struggled against when using Steve. Notably, he was the second Mr. Game & Watch player to win a major, doing so after using the character for all of top 8 at {{Trn|Maesuma'TOP 2}}.

==Playstyle==
Of all the various Steves, acola is perhaps the most well-rounded. With a critical understanding of Steve's strengths, acola excels at exhibiting patience while seizing critical opportunities with bursts of offense.

Although not the most technical, acola's punish game is nonetheless exceedingly deadly, often accruing 60% or more off of a single opening and being renown for his use of Steve’s diamond tools. Yet it is his parry game and defensive play that truly make his Steve so dangerous: acola has an uncanny knack for anticipating an opponent's attacks and responding with a perfect parry or footstool down-air out of shield. Moreover, he standardized defensive block placements behind Steve to [[tech]] incoming attacks and survive far longer than what would otherwise be possible for a character of Steve’s weight class. This defensive prowess serves as a perfect pair with Steve's extremely punishing moveset, as a single miscalculation on acola's opponent's side can lead to a devastating counterattack.

Another of acola's strengths is his creativity and adaptability. With Steve being a versatile character by nature, acola has shown quick thinking with elaborate block setups, whether that be for confusing edgeguards, defensive walls, or odd traps with [[Minecart]]. Acola has also been known to recognize flaws in his opponent’s strategy and wait until the last game in a set to fully dismantle that strategy, which is one of the main reasons why he has a reputation for winning game 5 scenarios in tournaments. Acola has shown little hesitation himself to play his character in a variety of ways, sometimes choosing to focus on resource development and exhibiting a camping strategy, while other times pushing the aggression so hard that he fights even with broken tools. Regardless, most times acola plays with the knowledge that opponents must approach him, and dictates his strategy on putting them in uncomfortable scenarios where they must take lopsided risks in order to engage.

A core aspect of acola's style is his patience and resolute fortitude when it comes to his gameplan. He has no hesitation camping or repeating moves if it is effective and proven to work. If his opponents cannot overcome a tactic of his, acola has no issue presenting that tactic over and over again until victory is achieved. As a result, acola's play style can be described as "low-risk, high-reward", he rarely takes chances and favors strategies and matchups that have proven track-records.

However, despite his accomplishments, acola is not invincible. One of his primary weaknesses has been difficulty adjusting when another player dictates the tempo of the game. Particularly against players like {{sm|Hurt}}, who forces others to play Snake's gameplan, or {{sm|Sparg0}}, who ignores Steve's defensive abilities, acola is most effective when he is dictating the pace of the match, and is conversely unused to other players forcing him to take certain actions.

==Tournament history==
===Smashmate beginnings===
acola began his ''Smash'' career during the [[COVID-19 pandemic]] on the Japanese ladder [[Smashmate]] under the tag Dear (ディア), which he played under until mid-2021. He began playing characters such as {{SSBU|Luigi}} and {{SSBU|Donkey Kong}}, however he found greater success playing {{SSBU|Steve}}, debuting on the [[Smashmate Rankings]] at 7th for the 13th season with mostly Steve. Since then, he began dominating the ladder, reaching 1st by the 15th season and maintaining that placement for the next several seasons. Due to his dominance during this period, acola was considered one of the best players in Japan's online metagame, with him placing 4th on kenniky's [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN66zf8M644 Top 50 Smashmate Players of All Time], which ranked Smashmate players up to the 22nd season.

===Offline debut and meteoric rise===
Despite his strong results online, acola had little impact on the offline scene in his first year, with his only attendance being a [https://challonge.com/x0homigo small event in November]. That changed in 2022, when acola was invited to {{Trn|Maesuma Offline}}. Despite being his first offline event with top players in attendance, acola surprised everyone by placing 2nd, defeating several established players along the way including {{Sm|Hero|p=Japan}}, {{Sm|Kome}}, and most notably {{Sm|Shuton}}, whom he reset the bracket against. Following this event was {{Trn|Sumabato SP 24}}, acola's first notable open bracket event. Coming in as the 14th seed, acola once again shocked players by taking the tournament over even more established players such as {{Sm|Abadango}} and {{Sm|HIKARU}}, marking his first superregional victory. These two events established acola as Japan's premier rising star and marked the start of acola's dominance in Japan, with him placing no lower than 2nd at several events afterwards.

These "several events" also included the Golden Week events, specifically the supermajors {{Trn|Maesuma TOP 7}} and {{Trn|Kagaribi 7}}. Both events featured many of Japan's best players, and both events also seeded acola outside of the top 8, with Kagaribi 7's algorithmic seeding notoriously seeding acola at 57th. Despite these challenges, acola blew both seeds out of the water by winning both events, defeating every single player that was in his path aside from a single set loss to {{Sm|Yoshidora}} at Maesuma. In addition, with his victory at Kagaribi, acola became the lowest-seeded player to ever win an ''Ultimate'' supermajor. These performances not only established acola as the new best player in Japan, but also made him known overseas, with players comparing his dominance to {{Sm|MkLeo}} and {{Sm|Sparg0}}, ''Ultimate''{{'}}s best two players at that time. Many players began anticipating a potential match between MkLeo and Sparg0, while other players dismissed acola as being yet another player in the wave of Steve players who saw strong performances that year. Nonetheless, many players began looking forward to how acola would fare against North America's best players.

acola would be given that chance in June: thanks to his victory at Kagaribi 7, he was given an invitation to {{Trn|The Gimvitational}}, an invitational that featured several of ''Ultimate''{{'}}s best players. Despite a shaky start by going to game 5 against Brazil's best player {{Sm|Ferps}}, acola ultimately placed 1st in his Round Robin pools, which includes defeating {{Sm|Kola}} 3-2, and as such began the final bracket on the Winners side. There, he tore through the competition, defeating {{Sm|Marss}} 3-0, fellow Japanese invitee {{Sm|Asimo}} 3-1, Canada's best player {{Sm|Riddles}} 3-1, and finally the United States's best player {{Sm|Light|p=Connecticut}} 3-1, winning his first international tournament. With that victory, acola became the first non-American player to win the first international major they attended since {{Sm|Otori}} at {{Trn|Apex 2012}}. The victory also established acola as one of the best players in the world, and he was ranked 4th on the [[OrionRank Mid-Year 2022]].

Due to his performance and sudden rise to the top, players also began wondering whether acola could be the definitive best player in the world, especially with MkLeo's declining results, Sparg0's hiatus following The Gimvitational, and Steve's perceived dominance in the metagame. In addition, acola continued to dominate the Japanese scene with several major titles and saw some strong performances in the United States, including winning the major {{Trn|Let's Make Moves Miami}} despite losing to {{Sm|MuteAce}}; and his performance at the supermajor invitational {{Trn|Ludwig Smash Invitational}}, where despite losing to {{Sm|Zomba}} in the Swiss bracket and MkLeo twice in the main bracket, he notably defeated Sparg0 3-2 to place 2nd.

On the other hand, players also noted how acola had a few statistics that did not favor his case, especially a few questionable losses to unranked Japanese players such as {{Sm|Kashiya}} at {{Trn|Maesuma Offline (Shikoku)}} and {{Sm|Meido}} at {{Trn|Sumabato SP 29}}; acola's performance at the former tournament also notably broke his streak of top 2 finishes, as he placed 4th after losing to {{Sm|alice}}. Further hurting his case was his performances at {{Trn|Smash Ultimate Summit 5}} and {{Trn|Seibugeki 12}}. In the former tournament, it seemed like American players were beginning to adapt to his playstyle, as he barely made it out of his Round Robin pools due to his loss to {{Sm|Dabuz}} -- which led to a string of tiebreakers between him, Dabuz, and {{Sm|Cosmos}} that ultimately went to best of 1 stock -- before losing his runbacks against Kola and Light to place 4th. In the latter tournament, acola was upset by {{Sm|Repo}} and {{Sm|Kameme}} to place 9th, the first time acola placed outside of the top 8. Finally, his run at {{Trn|Scuffed World Tour}} was also relatively lukewarm: although he evened his record against Light, he fell to Sparg0 and Shuton for 4th, giving him yet another major where he finished outside the top 2.

These few statistics ultimately kept acola away from being the best player in the world, and he was ranked 2nd on both the [[OrionRank 2022]] and the [[UltRank 2022]].

===Claiming the throne===
With acola's strong performances in the previous year, all he needed was to clean up a few unfortunate statistics in order to take the throne. The [[LumiRank Mid-Year 2023|first half of LumiRank 2023]] saw just that, as acola saw a string of performances that many had compared to MkLeo's performances in early ''Ultimate''. During this period, acola won nearly every event he attended and placed no lower than 7th at any event considered for the ranking. Most notable among these events include the supermajors {{Trn|Umebura SP 9}} and {{Trn|Kagaribi 9}}, two of the largest events in Japan for the Mid-Year season, and the major {{Trn|Smash Ultimate Summit 6}}, where after losing to {{Sm|Big D}}, he tore through the entire tournament, defeating everyone in his path -- including dominating {{Sm|MkLeo}} 3-0 in the runback -- to claim his first Summit victory. Further helping him was his loss record: only six players managed to take a set over acola, and all of them were ranked in the top 30 for the Mid-Year season; conversely acola only had one negative record against a player outside the top 10: {{Sm|MuteAce}} (#16), who has a 0-1 record against him. Finally, acola's overall record was impressive, as he held a 90-10 record against players who qualified for the rankings, which included a 64-10 record against the entire top 50.

However, there were a few things working against acola that challenged his path for #1, all of which was due to his new bracket demon, {{Sm|Sparg0}}. During this period, Sparg0 was able to decisively win all 5 of their encounters, with acola only taking a total of 2 games. In addition, acola failed to win any tournament that was ranked premier on the LumiRank Mid-Year 2023 -- the highest tier on the rankings -- as at all three events he was ultimately eliminated by Sparg0. This was most notable at the premiers {{Trn|Kagaribi 10}} and {{Trn|Battle of BC 5}}, where despite making it to Grand Finals at both events, acola lost to Sparg0 to place 2nd. Due to all of this, many players believed Sparg0 would come out on top for the Mid-Year ranking. However despite a close race, Sparg0's worse overall record and a couple of questionable major placements held him back, and acola was able to ascend to the throne, becoming the first Japanese player to be ranked #1 for a game released after ''Smash 64'' since {{Sm|9B}} on the [[SSBBRank 2014]]. 

The rest of the year effectively solidified acola as the best player in the world, especially following his premier-tier victory at {{Trn|Super Smash Con 2023}}, which also saw Sparg0 drastically underperforming. acola continued to win almost every event he entered, and made top 4 at the events he did not win. He notably had only one loss to a player outside the top 10 during this half of the year -- {{Sm|Hurt}}. In addition, many players took note of how acola frequently won sets that went to game 5, with a statistic showing that acola had won 87% of game 5 sets that year, earning him the nickname "Game 5 acola".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/TMMythra/status/1729538095089889784|title=Game 5 acola statistics}}</ref>

On the other hand, this period was not completely spotless, as acola began to develop a few new problematic opponents. The first was fellow Smashmate rival {{Sm|Miya|p=Honshu}}, who by the second half of the year had risen to became another contender for the best player in the world. Although acola had a strong record against Miya, this record began to shrink in the fall, notably after Miya blocked acola from winning another premier event by double-eliminating him at {{Trn|Kagaribi 11}}. The second was {{Sm|Sonix}}, who finally fought acola at {{Trn|Port Priority 8}} in a highly yet ironically anticipated matchup. The set ended in a devastating 3-0 from Sonix, and acola ultimately fell to Miya for 3rd, failing to win yet another premier event. Although these performances did little to hurt acola's overall standing, they also showcased how he was not as invincible as many players had assumed. This was the most apparent at acola's final event of the season, {{Trn|Watch The Throne}}, where he lost to Sparg0 and Sonix for 4th, albeit with better performances against both players. As such, although acola's record against almost everyone remained close to spotless, his record against the rest of the top 4, especially against Sparg0 and Sonix, was less than exemplary. Nonetheless, his dominant performances and impressive consistency was enough to help him maintain his #1 spot, being ranked 1st on the [[LumiRank 2023]].

===Focus on school and decreased activity===
Going into 2024, acola had a lot to prove after receiving somewhat disappointing results towards the end of 2023, with Miya being regarded by some players as the best player for the second half of 2023. He almost immediately fired back after an impressive run at {{Trn|Umebura SP 10}}, a Premier-tier event, repeating victories against fellow top 5 player Glutonny and notably claiming victory over Miya in grand finals, the first time he had beat one of the other horsemen since {{Trn|DELTA 5}}. However, the next couple of months would see acola not attending many events of note, but during this time acola saw a spotless record on every player he fought, and remained the only top player without a loss going into April. In addition, acola began to work more on his Aegis, using it to defeat Doramigi in two games in grands of {{Trn|Kamisuma 22}}, as well as defeating Asimo using Aegis in the final game of Grand Finals at {{Trn|KOWLOON 10}}. He notably reached a Smashmate rating of 2,500 with just Aegis, one of the few players to reach that rating with more than one character.

However, this year also saw acola shift his focus towards his academics, and as such his tournament activity declined in the following months. His most notable appearances during the first half of the year were at the Golden Week events {{Trn|DELTA 8}} and {{Trn|Kagaribi 12}}. acola won the former over Miya, but in the latter he was double-eliminated by {{Sm|Hurt}} twice to finish 3rd. Still, Kagaribi 12 marked the only event he did not win that season, and as such he remained ranked #1 on the [[LumiRank 2024.1]].

It wouldn't be until the second half of the year where his focus away from ''Smash'' would finally affect his tournament performance. He went to a total of six ranked events, and he was only able to win one: the supermajor {{Trn|Sumabato SP 52}}. Conversely, he fell to 2nd at three other supermajors, losing to Miya twice at {{Trn|Kowloon 12 with Kagaribi}}, {{Sm|Snow|p=Japan}} and Miya at {{Trn|Umebura SP 11}}, and {{Sm|Akakikusu}} and {{Sm|Asimo}} at {{Trn|Sumabato SP 51}}. Finally, acola failed to defend his Super Smash Con title at {{Trn|Supernova 2024}}, as he fell to {{Sm|Yoshidora}} right before top 24 before losing once again to {{Sm|Sonix}} for 7th. With his low activity compared to other contenders and him only having one major win under his belt, most players did not even consider acola a contender for #1, especially as both {{Sm|Sparg0}} and Miya won significantly more majors than acola.

Fortunately, acola's season was actually significantly better than what most players perceived. First, after struggling against Sparg0 throughout 2023, acola was finally able to defeat him at Kowloon 12 using Pyra and Mythra, utilizing tricks that many people believed were specifically geared towards countering Sparg0; as their set at Kowloon 12 was their only set of the season, it meant acola had a positive record on the eventual-#1 player of the season. In addition, acola's record against the top 50 remained incredible, as Akakikusu was his sole non-top 20 loss of the season, and even then Akakikusu was still ranked well in the top 50. Finally, despite winning only one event, acola continued his streak of entering top 8 at every event he attended, a feat that none of the other top 10 players that season achieved. His unique peaks and consistency meant that acola actually had a really strong season despite his lower activity. Though he was not ranked 1st, instead falling to 3rd on the [[LumiRank 2024.2]], his final score of 98.3 meant that he was surprisingly close to both Miya (who had a score of 99.1) and Sparg0 (who had a score of 100), and was also the highest score for a player who placed 3rd on an ''Ultimate'' ranking.

===Fight for the throne once more===
With LumiRank returning to a full-year ranking for 2025, acola was determined to reclaim the throne. At his first supermajor of the year {{Trn|Smash Awesome!}}, he would place 3rd, being double eliminated by Hurt in Winner's Semis and Loser's Finals. At his next event {{Trn|Maesuma'TOP 1}}, acola made Top 8 by defeating Navy and Raki, and then to Grand Finals by defeating Raru and Doramigi, all 3-2. Doramigi would punch his ticket into Grand Finals and reset the bracket by 3-0'ing him. However, acola would answer back with a 3-0 of his own, earning him his first supermajor win of the season. His first Premier {{Trn|GENESIS X2}} however, saw a repeat of what happened at Smash Awesome!: acola would sweep his bracket by defeating Mild na H.O 3-0, Zomba 3-1, Shuton 3-0, and Luugi 3-0, but Hurt 3-0'd him in Winner's Finals. acola would end Zomba's Losers bracket run with a 3-0 of his own, but in Grand Finals, Hurt overwhelmed acola and shut him out once more. At this point in the season, acola was playing from behind. Not only was Hurt matching his consistency, he had a 0-4 record to him in addition to Hurt having one more major win. 

The race for #1 saw a massive shake-up for both acola and Hurt at {{Trn|Battle of BC 7}}. Due to controversies regarding Hurt using a delay mod on his Switch, he would enter a 2 month self-ban post Battle of BC. acola losing his biggest threat and Hurt as well underperforming at Battle of BC (losing to Syrup's Ness and Monte for 9th place) meant that he had a lot of ground to catch up. That being said, his own performance at Battle of BC7 was shaky in itself. acola would be the only Japanese player to make Top 8 safely, as every other Japanese player lost their set to non-Japanese players past Top 24. acola would fall victim to this as well, as Sparg0 would win their runback from Kowloon 12 with Kagaribi, and Ouch!? would upset acola, netting the latter his first 5th place finish at a ranked event.

With {{Trn|LVL UP EXPO 2025}} taking place right before Japan's Golden Week, many Japanese players would make plans to travel to the US, including acola. Eventually, LVL UP EXPO 2025 became the second Premier event of the season, giving acola a chance to carve a lead for #1. In a completely unprecedented turn of events, the cracks in acola's armor of consistency shattered. acola would be upset not once, but twice by Mario players, first losing to Kurama 3-1, and then losing to Skinny the Pooh (the same player who also defeated former #1 MkLeo) 3-2 to place 33rd. Not only was this acola's first double-digit placing, it marked his worst performance at an Ultimate tournament ever, surpassing his 9th place performance at Seibugeki 12. In addition, his top 8 streak would break at 31 tournaments, just one tournament shy of matching MkLeo's record. With acola's limited attendance thus far, a severe underperfomance would heavily impact his chances for #1, especially as the same tournament saw another contender for the throne emerge: Doramigi. Doramigi would claim his first Premier victory at LVL UP EXPO 2025 (his second tournament of the season) and at that point, had made Top 8 at every event he attended (with his weakest placement being 5th). 

The event to cap off Golden Week for 2025 would be {{Trn|Kagaribi 13}}. Initially rising to A tier alone from international competitors, the amount of talent from all over the world and Japan signing up would lead to Kagaribi 13 surpassing the point threshold for a Premier event. Kagaribi 13 shaped up to be the first ever Superpremier event, and the most prestigious Ultimate tournament of all time, with 86 of the LumiRank 2024.2 Top 100 signing up. acola had a close call at the start of Top 64, going to game 5 with crêpe salée, but was able to make Top 8 with wins over 33Peranbox, TamaPDaifuku, and Rimu. At Winner's Semi-finals, acola would face off against Tweek, the latter determined to win his first set over the former #1. Tweek would go up 2-1 in the set, but acola would snag Game 4 away and successfully fend off Tweek Game 5 to advance to Winner's Finals. There he would face Raru, a player acola has defeated time over time. However, Raru would defeat his bracket demon 3-1, sending acola to Losers to face off his long time rival Miya (who was on a several set Loser's run after having lost to Glutonny). Miya would successfully go up 2-0 against acola, but acola rebounded and reverse swept Miya to make it to Grand Finals at the hardest Ultimate event ever. He would face Raru once more, using a combination of Steve and Aegis in the last game to take the first set 3-1. acola would then win the reset again at 3-1, winning first ever Superpremier tournament, and redeeming his underperformance at LVL UP Expo. 

While Kagaribi 13 was his last event of the season (dropping out of KOWLOON#16), many believed acola winning such a stacked event meant he effectively closed the race for #1. There were a lot of other factors going his way as well, with other contenders such as Miya and Sparg0 having bouts of inconsistency through their season and lacking a Premier win. Miya himself as well underperformed at LVL UP Expo with a 33rd of his own and Sparg0 missed Top 8 at 2 other Premiers. While Hurt's self-ban would not affect him as badly as others thought, his 33rd at DELTA#12 effectively knocked him out of contention for the throne. On the other hand, some believed Doramigi would take the throne, as he had a Premier win under his belt with 2 other major victories. Doramigi's win and loss quality was stellar in its own right, and he also performed well at Kagaribi 13, taking 5th place (tied with his other worst placement of the season). As the [[LumiRank Half Year 2025]] ranking was slowly being released, many factors were leaning that Doramigi won out, as he did not suffer a single loss outside of the Top 50 (the lowest being #32 Rarikkusu) and many players who performed well at Kagaribi were not ranked as high as expected. Ultimately, acola was ranked 2nd on LumiRank Half Year 2025, right behind the newest #1: Doramigi; even with his underperformance at LVL UP EXPO 2025, had acola won both Grand Finals sets against Hurt at GENESIS X2, he would have been ranked #1.

acola's chances to regain his title would continue to dwindle over the rest of the year; after Kagaribi 13, acola would remain relatively inactive compared to the players ranked around him; Doramigi, Miya, and Hurt all had better attendance records, and continued to place highly as beforehand. The former two would also see far more consistency than acola, both making Grand Finals within every major they attended after the half-season, and Hurt remained a formidable competitor, although not as consistent as the other two. Additionally, acola would find another uncharacteristic placement at the A+-tier {{Trn|Seibugeki 19}}, placing 9th overall, marking the third time acola missed top 8 of a tournament. Although he won {{Trn|Umebura SP 12}}, and placed 4th and 7th at {{Trn|Kagaribi 14}} and {{Trn|Riptide 2025}} respectively, the damage was already done. With Doramigi and Miya's dominance, and Hurt's continued proficiency, acola would be unable to reclaim the throne, but remained one of the best players in the world due to his success at Kagaribi 13 and other solid performances.
