Note: Snake wondering how Yoshi tastes could be a reference to ''Metal Gear Solid 3'', where the protagonist, [[Naked Snake]] (later known as Big Boss, the father of Solid Snake), had to capture live animals and eat them to restore stamina. Whenever his team mate Para-Medic mentioned a new animal that she had found, Snake would always ask about its taste, much to her disgust.

While Yoshi is typically portrayed since ''Yoshi's Story'' as being unable to speak and only saying his name or babbling, certain games do give him written dialogue, most notably his debut in ''Super Mario World''. This is likely what Otacon means when he says that Yoshi can "kind of" talk. In the Japanese text, Otacon—responding to Snake's assumption that Yoshi is female—says that Yoshi's [[wikipedia:Japanese pronouns|personal pronoun]] is {{ja|{{ruby|僕|ぼく}}|boku}}, a typically masculine pronoun. Yoshi introduces himself with this pronoun in the Japanese text of ''Super Mario World'' ({{ja|ぼく ヨッシー|boku yosshī}}), and it has remained consistent whenever Yoshi is given written dialogue.
