Chef Kawasaki debuted in ''[[Kirby Super Star]]'' as a mid-boss and the source of the {{iw|wikirby|Cook}} ability, and later reprised this role in ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby Star Allies}}''. Originally, he had two attacks: using his ladle to grab the player character and cook them with a frying pan, or throwing dishes and silverware as projectiles. When copied, the Cook ability allowed Kirby to draw enemies toward him and cook them in a boiling pot, receiving an food item for each defeated enemy. Kawasaki's appearance as an Assist Trophy in ''Ultimate'' combines Kawasaki's ladle grab with Cook Kirby's attack; the latter of which Kawasaki can also use as a {{iw|wikirby|Friend}} in ''Kirby Star Allies''.

Chef Kawasaki appears as an [[Assist Trophy]] in ''Super Smash Bros. Ultimate''. He uses a ladle to grab opponents from afar, then puts them in a boiling pot, which launches them and creates [[food]]; this is similar to [[Cook Kirby]], {{SSBB|Kirby}}'s [[Final Smash]] in ''Brawl''. Up to three characters can be in the pot at a time, and three food items are spawned per character. The {{SSBU|Ice Climbers}} count as two different characters, thus generating six items off a single player, making them a valuable target in a game with assist trophies on. He can also throw plates as projectiles, and he leaves behind a random food item before disappearing. This means he can generate a maximum of ten food items per summon. He is one of several Assist Trophies that can be KO'd. [[Training Mode]] describes his Assist Trophy: ''Grabs hold of opponents and mixes them into a pot. Once the broth is ready, he'll make health recovery items!''

The foods that Chef Kawasaki is able to leave behind are: pancakes, strawberry shortcakes, cherry pies, hamburgers (all with a {{Fractions|50|260}} chance), hotdogs ({{Fractions|30|260}} chance), kebabs, bread, and onigiris (all with a {{Fractions|10|260}} chance).

Chef Kawasaki also appears as a [[support spirit]]. In [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]], his spirit is located in the [[Gourmet Race]] sub-area of [[The Light Realm]] and can be encountered if the player collects 7-10 pieces of food.

His Spirit Battle uses a plaid [[Pac-Man]] puppet fighter and is fought on [[Green Greens]]. Pac-Man is drawn towards frequently spawning food items which increase his stats after consumption. Chef Kawasaki also appears as a hostile Assist Trophy for the fight.

*During the Chef Kawasaki Spirit Battle, Kawasaki's timer is disabled, as with many Assist Trophy enemies, but he will still despawn after using his cooking attack.
*Chef Kawasaki is the only Assist Trophy from the ''Kirby'' series that does not vocalize in any way, even with an already existing voice from the ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby: Right Back at Ya!}}'' anime, as was the case for [[Knuckle Joe]] and [[Nightmare]].
