{{pkmn|Celebi}} is a Psychic/Grass-type {{iw|bulbapedia|Mythical Pokémon}} introduced in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation II}}, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #251 as the "Time Travel Pokémon". It is depicted as the guardian of the forests and possesses the ability to travel through time, though this ability is shown in the main series ''Pokémon'' games only in a secret event in ''{{iw|bulbapedia|Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver}}''. Despite its ''DOJO!!'' description, Celebi cannot learn {{iw|bulbapedia|Fly|move}} in any game. In the National Pokédex, it is registered as #251 and it is also the last Pokémon in the Johto Dex.

Celebi is very special among the Pokémon who can be summoned. First, it must be [[unlock]]ed by unlocking all [[stage]]s, unlocking [[Score Display]] (5,000 KOs), and seeing [[Mew]] at least once. Once done, the chance of Celebi appearing is 1/251 ("251" being the total number of Pokémon in existence at the time of ''Melee''{{'}}s release) just like Mew.

Like Mew, Celebi's action is not an attack: Celebi gently flies off the screen a few seconds after it's summoned. Afterwards, the summoner is awarded the rare "Celebi Catcher" bonus for 8,000 points. The first time this is achieved, it yields a [[Notice|special achievement message]] saying "You've encountered Celebi for the first time!" and awards the player the Celebi [[trophy]].

Celebi's and Mew's chance to spawn are determined independently, with Celebi being determined before Mew. Additionally, either of the two can only appear once per match, meaning if Mew appears then Celebi cannot or vice versa, and then neither will be able to appear afterwards.

Celebi, as with all other Poké Ball Pokémon, features as a collectible trophy. The trophy is earned by encountering Celebi once during any match. This makes it one of the hardest trophies to earn because the player must play the majority of the game along with the small 1/251 chance.

Celebi returns as a Poké Ball Pokémon in ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl''. Its behavior remains the same, but instead of awarding a bonus it drops several trophies as it flies away. After the player first sees Celebi, they will get a notice saying that they have seen it for the first time and "It is a rare event indeed".

Mew, [[Jirachi]], and Celebi appear 1/492 of the time individually (3/492 for all then 1/3 for each), with there being 492 known Pokémon in {{iw|bulbapedia|Generation IV}} (the latest Generation at the time of ''Brawl''{{'}}s release) prior to the reveal of [[Arceus]].

In [[Adventure Mode: World of Light]], Celebi is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by [[Galeem]] during his takeover of the universe. After Galeem's defeat, [[Dharkon]] takes control of Galeem's spirits, including Celebi. Celebi's spirit is located in the [[Sacred Land]] sub-dungeon of [[The Dark Realm]].

Celebi's Spirit Battle uses a {{SSBU|Mewtwo}} puppet fighter and is fought on the [[Garden of Hope]] stage's [[Battlefield form]]. During the battle, the stage is covered with fog. Also, the player's fighter takes minor damage while Mewtwo heals overtime, referencing Celebi's {{iw|bulbapedia|Leech Seed|move}} move, which drains the opponent's health every turn and restores the user's health.
