Yoshi (ヨッシー) |Yoh-she'| is a dinosaurlike video game character appearing in a number of video games produced by Nintendo. Yoshi has appeared in a wide assortment of colors. However, the most widely known colored Yoshi is a green Yoshi. In Nintendo video games, Yoshi debuted as Mario's primary mode of private transportation in the game Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment Series and Super Famicom game consoles. Yoshi was instantly popular with players, quickly becoming the protagonist in his own series of platform and puzzle games for various consoles. Due to repeated involvement in a multitude of Mario titles, Yoshi has subsequently become a major and one of the most popular characters in the Mario series.

Yoshi (ヨッシー, Yoshi) is a character in the Mario series. Since his debut in mariowiki as an ally of Mario and Luigi, Yoshi's popularity has resulted in him starring in his own series, which follows the adventures of Yoshi and/or his eponymous species.

Species
As a member of the "perfect-attendance crew", Yoshi has been featured as a playable character throughout the Super Smash Bros. series.

Yoshis are commonly depicted in games as having very long, sticky tongues and tend to swallow the targets instead of chewing them up. Yoshis can eat almost anything. They are omnivorous, but seem to enjoy eating tropical fruits, as well. When a Yoshi devours a living creature, however, the ingested creature is transformed into (or possibly encased in) an egg, which they sometimes use as projectiles. These theories have never been officially addressed by Nintendo. Their noses, taking up half of their heads, can detect fruit and other secrets buried underground. Although they have teeth, these are rarely seen or used. The few times they are seen are mostly in Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Island. Yoshis are generally depicted in games as being quite intelligent from a young age, many being able to defend themselves while still infants. While the main Yoshi himself is depicted as green, they come in a variety of colors, spanning every color of the rainbow. They also come in  black and white, although rarely.  The plural of Yoshi is generally accepted as either "Yoshis" or "Yoshies", as both have been used by Nintendo.
Origin
Shigeru Miyamoto considered giving Mario some kind of companion as far back as the planning stages of Super Mario Bros., but the concept was scrapped due to hardware limitations. During the development of mariowiki, Miyamoto had drawn a picture of Mario riding a horse. Taking note of the picture, Takashi Tezuka came to the conclusion that Miyamoto desired Mario to ride something, and implemented that idea into the development of Super Mario World.

Appearances
Due to mariowiki being the setting of Super Mario World, Tezuka had Shigefumi Hino draw artwork for a kind of reptile. According to Hino, he took "horse" as a keyword and designed a large lizard similar to a crocodile in order to better integrate the concept. After reconsidering this design, Hino and Tezuka instead decided to use a rough sketch drawn by Tezuka, which was refined by Hino into what would become Yoshi's finalized design.
Yoshi's first appearance was in Super Mario World, an adventure game originally appearing on the Super Famicom in Japan and quickly following suit in the North American and PAL territories on the Super Nintendo.

Yoshi was created by Shigefumi Hino, a graphics designer and later the director of Pikmin, when Shigeru Miyamoto finished Super Mario Bros. This was in response to Nintendo's design staff expressing a desire for Mario to ride a dinosaur. In addition to the main green Yoshi, his red, blue, and yellow counterparts also debuted in the game. The main green Yoshi would hatch immediately from his egg and grow to its current height, while his colorful friends each had to be fed five enemies, mushrooms, or stars before they would grow to a size on which Mario could ride. Each of the colored Yoshis had a special ability; blue Yoshis could fly, yellow Yoshis caused small earthquakes upon hitting the ground, and red Yoshis breathed fire. In addition, every Yoshi did whatever abilities were directly linked to the color of the shell he swallowed as well as his own; for example, a blue yoshi swallowing a red shell could fly as well as breathe fire. If the shell flashed different colors, any Yoshi could use all three abilities. Green Yoshis had no special abilities of their own.
Yoshi is the most recurring member of the sapient and friendly reptilian species of the same name. The Yoshi species possesses an amalgamation of reptilian characteristics: the physique of a theropod mariowiki, a turtle-like shell that functions as a saddle, and a chameleon-like tongue. On a related note, a chameleon's ability to change their skin coloration could be referenced by the variety of color schemes present among the various other Yoshis.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Yoshi had a rival in the form of a bad-tempered, sunglasses-wearing blue creature named Boshi (Washi in Japan). This was Boshi's sole appearance. In Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's main task was aiding Mario and his allies by attempting to eat an enemy when Mario or an ally used a Yoshi Cookie during battle.
The Yoshi species debuted in mariowiki, where Mario or Luigi would be able to find mariowikis, which would hatch automatically to reveal a fully grown Yoshi. Later in the game, mariowikis could also be found. Baby Yoshis can be held, thrown, and matured into fully grown Yoshis. In order to do the latter, a Baby Yoshi must eat five enemies.

Yoshi went on to star in three more adventure games (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, and Yoshi's Island DS) and three puzzle games (Yoshi's Cookie, the simply-titled Yoshi, and Tetris Attack). Later, the Game Boy Advance re-release Super Mario Advance 3 was a remake of Yoshi's Island plus six new levels.
Alongside Yoshi himself, three differently colored Yoshis also appear, each of which has a distinct special ability that can be used so long as they have a Koopa Troopa shell in their mouths. Blue Yoshi can fly, Red Yoshi can spit out Fireballs, and Yellow Yoshi can emit a mariowiki after landing a jump. While Yoshi himself does not have any distinct special abilities, he can use each of the three other Yoshis' abilities by holding a shell of the same color as the respective Yoshi, such as a red shell allowing him to spit out Fireballs. By extension, the other three Yoshis can do the same.

Yoshi is one of the characters in the original Nintendo 64 Super Smash Bros., and the GameCube sequel Super Smash Bros. Melee. Yoshi made a cameo in Super Mario 64, and he is rideable in Super Mario Sunshine . In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, several Yoshis appear at a place called "Yoshi Theater." In order to obtain a piece of the Beanstar (one of the underlying goals in the game), the player is required to feed the Yoshis. A baby Yoshi is obtainable as a partner in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door'. This Yoshi was not necessarily entitled "Yoshi" in the game, as the player can name the partner whatever he or she wishes. Yoshi is a fully playable character in Super Mario 64 DS on the Nintendo DS. He is also the star of Yoshi Topsy-Turvy for the Game Boy Advance and Yoshi Touch & Go for the Nintendo DS.
Yoshi has reprised his steed roles in later Mario titles, both in 2D games such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Maker, and in 3D games such as Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Yoshi has, on three occasions, also been playable on his own in Mario platformer titles - in Super Mario 64 DS, where he is the starter character and is tasked with rescuing Mario, in Super Mario Run, where a variety of colors can be unlocked by recruiting Toads in the "Toad Rally" mode, and in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, where he can be used both as a playable character and a steed.

Yoshi appears in Mario Kart DS, where his karts were the Egg 1, Cucumber and standard go-kart. Yoshi also appears prominently in Mario is Missing!, Yoshi's Safari, and the numerous sports and party games starring the cast of the Mario universe.
Yoshi has long been a popular staple of the multiplayer Mario spin-off games, where he has typically been a speedy character and is often paired with fellow dinosaur Birdo from the American Super Mario Bros. 2 (implied in certain titles to be his girlfriend). Many games also let players choose from a variety of different Yoshi colors.

Yoshi appeared again in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, in which several Yoshis appear, along with an oversized Yoshi shaped Shroob named Yoob. The green Yoshi appears to be the prominent "Super Dragon" individual, and seems to be a leader of sorts against Yoob. However, he doesn't recognize the adult Mario & Luigi and slightly grown baby versions with clothes rather than diapers.
In the Yoshi series
After the success of Super Mario World and the positive reception of Yoshi, Nintendo capitalized by releasing several spinoff entries at a rapid pace. These include the puzzle games Yoshi and mariowiki, the light gun game mariowiki compatible with the Super Scope. Due to Shigeru Miyamoto's dislike of these games, he aimed to make a game starring Yoshi that was authentic to his character. This game would come to be known as mariowiki, which saw a myriad of differently colored members of the species appear. The Yoshis' ability to eat virtually anything was expanded to include the ability to create Yoshi Eggs capable of being thrown. In addition, Yellow Yoshi's sand cloud-generating jump was modified into a mariowiki usable by all other Yoshis. Outside of these updated abilities, the Yoshis also gained the ability to mariowiki and transform into vehicles. Following this, Panel de Pon would be reskinned as mariowiki for international markets, featuring Yoshi and the many new characters introduced in Yoshi's Island.

Yoshi did not make an appearance in the story mode of New Super Mario Bros., out of a desire from the creators to recreate the feel of the original NES Mario sidescrollers. However, he is the understudy to the bunny, also did appear in the mini-games, some of which were borrowed from Super Mario 64 DS.
In addition to being the first installment of the Yoshi's Island sub-series, Super Mario World 2 is the first installment in the Mario series' in-universe timeline: it details mariowiki being captured by Kamek and his mariowikis while being delivered by a mariowiki, while a group of Yoshis discover the missing mariowiki and work to rejoin him with his twin brother. After being rescued by the Yoshis, the stork resumes its journey to deliver the newly reunited baby Mario Bros. to their parents. This same plotline would be retold in the endless runner game, mariowiki.

Yoshi again has a starring role in Yoshi's Island DS on Nintendo DS was released in November 2006. Yoshi's Island DS is a direct sequel to Yoshi's Island in gameplay and content. Interestingly, unlike Yoshi Touch and Go on the DS, this game decided to introduce the concept of a gap between the two screens of the DS to enable better aiming of Yoshi's eggs.
That is followed by the next event in the Yoshi canon, mariowiki, where upon arriving at its supposed destination, the stork discovers that the family living there were not expecting children. This mishap results in the stork once again being attacked by Kamek and his Toadies, who recapture Baby Luigi while Baby Mario falls to the floating mariowiki, which is home to another group of Yoshis. Much like their counterparts on Yoshi's Island, this group of Yoshis bands together to reunite the baby Mario Bros. and stop Baby Bowser from turning Egg Island into his own personal resort - with adult Bowser travelling back in time to serve as a secret final boss for players who don't use the Flutter Wings. Should the player beat him, it will also be revealed that adult Mario has travelled back in time under the guise of the helpful Mr. Pipe.

Yoshi, along with other Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog characters is set to appear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games according to SEGA.
Despite the stork successfully delivering the baby Mario Bros. to their proper parents, Kamek and his Toadies nevertheless kidnap several babies from across the Mushroom Kingdom as part of their search for the seven mariowiki, thus leading to the events in mariowiki. Unlike the previous two instances, the stork fights back against Kamek and the Toadies, thus resulting in Baby Mario and mariowiki being dropped onto Yoshi's Island during the scuffle. Upon reuniting with Baby Mario, the Yoshis decide to save not only Baby Luigi, but also any other babies that were kidnapped. During their journey, they ally with three other star children: Baby Peach, mariowiki and mariowiki.

Yoshi's Age
Meanwhile, it is revealed that the adult Bowser traveled back in time once more to extract the star children's stars in order to use their power to rule the universe. By extension, it is also revealed that the Kamek and Toadies that kidnapped the babies were not from the past, but rather came from the present, alongside Bowser. However, a squabble between the Baby and present day Bowsers results in Bowser inadvertently causing his infant self to fall out of his castle, land on a Yoshi's back, and thus create an uneasy alliance between mariowiki (who is a star child himself) and his longtime foes.
Yoshi's age appears to be unclear. Yoshi seems to be the oldest character in the Mario series having been around since Mario was a baby. The green Yoshi of Yoshi's Island is generally considered to be the main Yoshi of the Mario series. However, at the end of the recently released Yoshi's Island DS, a baby Yoshi is shown hatching when a star approaches it. Since all of the other babies with stars are prominent characters of the Mario series, this newborn Yoshi is likely the "Super Dragon" Yoshi that Mario first encounters in Super Mario World and now participates in all the Mario spinoff games. This is still speculative though, as that ending was ambiguous and Nintendo has not released an official word.

Television, film, and comics
Despite Baby Wario and Baby Bowser leaving the group because of a desire for money and a retrieval by present day Kamek, respectively, the Yoshis nevertheless arrive at Baby Bowser's castle. Upon doing so, they reunite with Baby Wario, who sought Baby Bowser's treasure. Together, the green, pink, yellow and purple Yoshis band together with the remaining four babies to defeat Baby Bowser and then adult Bowser, thus foiling Bowser's plan and saving Baby Luigi and the rest of the kidnapped babies. Although the seventh and final star child is not encountered by the Yoshis, Bowser or Kamek, the ending reveals the final star child to be a newly hatched green mariowiki, thus strongly implying him to be the very same Yoshi character that the grown up Mario Bros. would go on to rescue and ally with in Super Mario World and subsequent Mario games.
An animated series followed Super Mario World, bearing the same name, and was similar in plotline to the previous series, Super Mario Bros. (TV)#Season 2: The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3|The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, but with a different
setting. The show featured Yoshi as a regular character, voiced by Andrew Sabiston (who later provided the voice of Diddy Kong in the Donkey Kong Country cartoon). The cartoon portrays Yoshi with the personality of a very young child, and, therefore, he speaks like one, often in third person. He is often afraid of many things that young children would be afraid of, such as boo and water (perhaps referenced much later on in Super Mario Sunshine, a GameCube title in which Yoshi literally can't stand water). This may be based on his reactions to attacks by enemies in Super Mario World (he runs off when hit and will even run off of a cliff if Mario]fails to chase after him) and/or the fact that Yoshi refuses to enter Ghost Houses, forts, or castles. Interestingly, his design in the show changed over time to better match his video-game design.

In the episode "Mama Luigi", the plot tells how Luigi found Yoshi after being ambushed by Bowser on vacation. After cracking Yoshi's shell, Yoshi emerges as a baby, calling Luigi "Mama Luigi." The episode continues to more or less adapt to the game of Super Mario World, as Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi travel to the castle of Bowser (referred to as his original Japanese name, King Koopa, in the cartoons), and save the princess.
Several other Yoshi platformer games have also been released, seemingly outside of the Yoshi's Island canon, mariowiki tells the story of a group of Yoshi hatchlings who must retrieve the Super Happy Tree that provides their adult counterparts with their undying optimism from Baby Bowser, mariowiki, a gyrometer-based game, introduces a set of mostly human-like characters known as the Yoshi Island Spirits, who Yoshi must complete missions from to prove he's worthy of taking on the adult Bowser, mariowiki, where a group of Yoshis made of wool must work together to rescue one another after being scattered as bundles of yarn by Kamek and Baby Bowser, and mariowiki where the Yoshis have to recover pieces of the wish-granting Sundream Stone from Baby Bowser and Kamek - These titles all take place in worlds made to appear homemade out of materials such as cardboard and wool. The only baby shown in these particular games is Baby Bowser.

Due to its early cancellation, Yoshi was not featured in the Super Mario Bros. comic books published by Valiant Comics. However, he managed to appear in the Nintendo Adventure Books, which were somewhat based on them. There, his dialogue consists of words that rhyme with "orp", as he does not speak English there like in the cartoon. The game version however, consists of some Yoshis that can speak English (including "Super Dragon" Yoshi himself), and others that only understand their native tongue. He also features prominently in the Super Mario Adventures comic serial printed in Nintendo Power. There, his dialogue consists mainly of his own name. (Incidentally, he talks this way in most Mario games since Yoshi's Story in 1998. But in a Japanese Mario Paint ad he does actually speak.) According to these comics, Yoshi is the Chairman of the Dinosaur Chamber of Commerce, who is searching for a group of missing Yoshi Villagers whom Bowser has captured. Yoshi also appears in the critically maligned Super Mario Bros. movie. In the movie, Yoshi took the form of a realistic animatronic dinosaur, very much like a smaller version of Jurassic Park's velociraptors, instead of a live-action animated character. Although extremely different in appearance than its video game counterpart, it still shares some resemblance with a long tongue, friendliness and courage. He is also downsized to the point that he could not support Mario at all.

Yoshi makes his first appearance in a fighting game in Super Smash Bros. as a starting playable character. His design is based on his appearance from Super Mario World. In comparison to the rest of the roster, Yoshi is arguably the most unique. His shield is a mariowiki instead of a standard bubble that shrinks, which makes him immune to shield stabbing.

Yoshi has also appeared in one episode of the Kirby Super Star manga.
Another noticeable distinction Yoshi possesses is his lack of a recovery move. Instead, he makes up for this with a long-distanced and generally safe double jump. Although Yoshi's unique traits make him rather difficult for beginners to learn, his very versatile combo options, most notably his double jump canceled aerials, are very useful for combos, pressuring and KOing. Thanks to his strengths, Yoshi is ranked 5th on the current tier list, placing him in the A tier.

Cameos
Yoshi's in-game description reads:
Yoshi also makes a few cameo appearances in the Legend of Zelda series, specifically in Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (alongside Mario). In the former game, he appears as a doll item that Link must bring to a baby at the first town in Koholint Island, and the baby's parents give him a ribbon. In the latter game, he appears in a portrait hung in Hyrule Castle, next to Mario, seen through a window in the courtyard where Link meets Zelda.

:Yoshi is the friendly dinosaur of Yoshi's Island. He began as Mario's partner, but has since built his own identity, and now appears in many games. He uses his unique ability to turn  whatever he swallows into an egg as his foremost attack. Yoshis come in a rainbow of colors and are said to have a high IQ from a very early age.

Yoshi makes a brief appearance in Konami's Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for the GameCube, where Yoshi is a figurine on Otacon's desk along with a figurine of Mario. If a player shoots at the Yoshi figurine, it makes a sound similar to the one heard in the later Yoshi games.

Due to its maze-like shape, it is difficult to determine position and progress during the race. A track in Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the Game Boy Advance is named "Yoshi Desert", complete with a Yoshi-headed Sphinx in the background. A track in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for the Nintendo GameCube is named "Yoshi Circuit" and is shaped like a Yoshi. This track was brought over to Mario Kart DS. A track in Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS is named "Yoshi Falls" with a huge egg floating in the water.

Yoshi (SSBM)

Yoshi returns in Melee as a starting playable character. His design is still based on his appearance from Super Mario World. Yoshi stays relatively unchanged, but is given a few new visual properties, such as a more dinosaur-like posture. He has also received several new and unique techniques, such as edge-canceled eggs.

Yoshi also appears at the end of Donkey Kong Country 2 for the SNES and the GBA. Once the player has beaten Kaptain K. Rool, during the ending sequence of the game, Mario, Yoshi and Link make an appearance. In the SNES version, Link only appears if players collect fewer than nineteen DK Coins. In the Game Boy Advance version, Yoshi and Link swap positions, and Yoshi only appears if players have fewer than thirty-five DK Coins.
Although Yoshi can continue to double jump cancel, he was somewhat nerfed; he is now unable to jump out of his shield and continues to lack a vertical recovery, two distinct traits that must be adapted to in order to bypass their drawbacks. However, Yoshi's unique shield physics, powerful attacks and status as an agile heavyweight nonetheless make him a capable character.

In adaptations of the NES Super Mario Bros. trilogy, Yoshi has been retroactively added in the games in some way:
While Yoshi was initially regarded poorly, his position in the current metagame has improved significantly thanks to some Yoshi professionals, most notably aMSa. As a result, Yoshi is ranked 10th on the current tier list, placing him in the B+ tier.
*In the Super Mario Bros. DX adaptation of Super Mario Bros., the game's Challenge Mode offers a hidden Yoshi egg in each level. If one is found, a Yoshi would hatch out of it after the stage is cleared.
*In the Super Mario Advance adaptation of Super Mario Bros. 2, a Yoshi Challenge mode is unveiled after clearing the game. Here, the player has to find two Yoshi eggs in each level. Once all the eggs in that world are found, they will hatch into Yoshis.
*In the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4 adaptations of Super Mario Bros. 3, the king of World 7 is transformed into a Yoshi by Ludwig von Koopa (whereas in the original version of the game, predating Yoshi's invention, the king is transformed into a Piranha Plant).

Yoshi also makes an appearance in the Nintendo 64 game, Super Mario 64. When the player gains all 120 stars, a cannon will open on the castle grounds and the player can use it to blast Mario onto the roof of the castle, where he can meet and talk to Yoshi, who gives the player 100 lives and an upgraded Starman-esque triple jump. However, in the Nintendo DS remake, Super Mario 64 DS, he is the first playable character.
Trophies
As a playable character, Yoshi has three trophies - a normal trophy won beating the Classic Mode with Yoshi on any difficulty, and "Smash Red" and "Smash Blue" trophies are acquired by beating the Adventure and All-Star modes, respectively. He is also present in the "Mario & Yoshi" trophy, which can only be acquired in the NTSC and PAL versions via hacking device, whereas it could only be acquired in the Japanese version via a special Japanese events or by using a hacking device.<ref>[https://tcrf.net/Super_Smash_Bros._Melee/Version_Differences#Trophies Super Smash Bros. Yoshis also can make a variety of sounds. In Super Mario World, hopping onto Yoshi's saddle made one of a few sounds of affirmation; these were Yoshi's trademark noises until Yoshi's Story, when the character (voiced by Nintendo musician Kazumi Totaka) began muttering its name and unintelligible words (such as "gong" and "hup"), usually when idle or jumping. In Mario Kart 64, it also makes a squeaking sound.  Nonetheless, Nintendo 64 games like the Mario Party series, Mario Golf, and others, still feature Yoshi with the same sounds as in Super Mario World.

During the localization of Panel de Pon for the U.S., when the game was renamed Tetris Attack, Nintendo of America replaced the fairy-like characters with characters from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, with Yoshi stepping in for the Pon main character Lip.

Yoshi's appearances in video games, usually Mario sports games, typically portray him as an agile character. In Mario Kart games, Yoshi has excellent acceleration, but he is more likely to skid off the track than other characters. In Mario Golf, his shot is straight and average in height. In Mario Tennis and Mario Power Tennis, he is the fastest tennis player. In Mario Superstar Baseball, Yoshi is the speediest runner and can use his tongue to catch faraway balls. In Super Mario Strikers, Yoshi is a balanced captain. When he performs his Super Strike, green and yellow bubbles surround the character as he kicks the ball into the back of the net, usually hitting the goalie in the stomach and taking him into the net with it. Most recently, in Mario Hoops 3-on-3, Yoshi is an All-Around character, in contrast to his speedy nature in other sports games. His Special Shot is the Flutter Dunk, performed by tapping an "M" pattern on the touch screen twice. At close range, he holds the ball as he hovers toward the hoop in typical Yoshi style, leaving a rainbow trail. When he is outside the three-point line, he throws the ball to another teammate, with another rainbow trail behind the ball.

As a playable character
Yoshi (SSBB)

Yoshi once again returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Unlike in SSB and Melee, he now sports his design since mariowiki, mariowiki, and mariowiki. His moves are relatively unchanged from his Melee moveset, except for the fact that Egg Toss can now function as a makeshift third jump when used in mid-air. This is a welcome change for Yoshi, especially since his already fast air speed has become even faster, and the directional air dodge that aided his recovery in Melee has been removed. Yoshi also boasts a much better grab game, thanks to receiving grab release follow-ups.

Yoshi's name may be derived from the typical Japanese interjection Yoshi!, whose equivalent in English language would be "yes!", reflecting Yoshi's general upbeat nature.
However, alterations to Yoshi's double jump and aerial Egg Roll's momentum have significantly harmed his recovery, while his new grab release follow-ups do not fully compensate for the loss of his double jump canceled combos. Like other characters, Yoshi has received a Final Smash; in his case, it is Super Dragon. Super Dragon involves him growing angelic wings that allow him to fly and gaining the ability to breathe fire either as a powerful mariowiki or a stream of flames, while he is rendered invincible throughout its duration.

The only Yoshi that can be considered bad is Boshi, a blue Yoshi with a spiked collar, and the only one not wearing traditional shoes, as the shoes he does wear have the toes removed. Boshi has only appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
As a result of the severity of his nerfs, Yoshi is ranked 27th on the current tier list, placing him in the D tier.

Also, Yoshi seems to be the originator of the "ground pound" or "hip drop", a move where a character jumps into the air, flips and then slams into the ground. Yoshi first performed the move in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The move has been performed many times in later games, such as Super Mario 64 DS, Super Mario Sunshine and various entries in the Mario Party franchise.

It should also be noted that many of the yoshi species is refered to as many yoshi, this is how it is writen in yoshis island, other than on the title which refers to the island refering to the yoshi, this however is contridicted by the text in the manual of yoshi's island DS.

Design/Appearance
Despite having the same general appearance throughout the course of his existence, Yoshi's appearance has slightly changed over the years. Originally, his features resembled much more of a dinosaur, having a long neck, small arms, and a wider back (conveniently for Mario to ride on). According to Satoru Iwata, Yoshi "ended up looking like a dinosaur ... because something like a dinosaur was the shape which was allowed by the (Super Nintendo hardware's) technical limitations."

The first game to have Yoshi's appearance altered is Yoshi's Island, with him being much shorter, chubbier, and having larger arms and hands (he could also hover slightly for a small time and throw eggs at enemies or targets). It is possible that this new look was intended to be his "younger" form, as the storyline takes place years before his first appearance in Super Mario World. This design was again used in Yoshi's Story, which had much more noticeable changes to his new look, due to the game being 3-D, as well as their being infantile hatchlings. It showed him having much more human-like features (i.e.: standing up straight instead of curved, swinging his arms while running.)

This new look for Yoshi has been used for the remaining Mario games ever since. Games such as the Mario Party series, the Mario Sports series, and even the Paper Mario series used this new appearance for Yoshi, likely making this his final design. Yoshi's design was changed for the remake of Super Mario 64 for the DS, from his original "dinosaur" look, to his new shorter, stubbier, fatter look (so that he looked similar to the other characters). He also inherited hovering and egg-throwing from the previous games, but he could only keep one egg with him as opposed to being able to carry much larger amounts (for example in Yoshi's Island, he was able to carry 6 eggs at one time).

As a playable character
Yoshi (SSB4)

Yoshi returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. In addition to a more upright posture, SSB4s aesthetic has resulted in Yoshi's overall color scheme being considerably more vibrant and his design being more cartoony. Altogether, these changes make him appear much more in line with his appearances in the latest Mario and Yoshi games. He also has two new alternate costumes: Purple Yoshi and Black Yoshi.

The number of orange, plate-like scales on Yoshi's back vary between games. In Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, Yoshi has four plates, but in cases where he's given a chubbier, more anthropomorphic appearance and walks erect, he will usually only have three plates.
Yoshi has been buffed in the transition from Brawl to SSB4, with increased speed and utility to his moveset, while his decent dashing speed has become considerably faster. His aforementioned altered posture is also a buff, as it makes his hurtbox's positioning less awkward. Yoshi's KOing options and set-ups were also improved, while he also regained the ability to jump out of shield, something he could not do since SSB. His shield was further buffed by his shield drop becoming much quicker.

As with other Mario characters, Yoshi's design in Super Smash Bros. Melee is unique to the game, but borrows elements from all his previous designs. Yoshi will generally walk with a posture much like in his earlier games, but will stand somewhat erect while taunting, mimicking the gesture he made in Yoshi's Story upon sniffing out a hidden item. He also has a long neck comparable to earlier designs, but retains the large, useful hands of later games.
However, Yoshi also received nerfs to his overall damage output. His grab game has been also drastically nerfed, as the removal of chain grabbing removed his useful grab release follow-ups. Despite his improved shield, Yoshi's rolls are still slow and short-distanced, limiting his ability to escape from pressure.

In both Super Mario Sunshine and Yoshi's Island DS, when someone (Mario in Super Mario Sunshine; the babies in Yoshi's Island DS) rides a Yoshi, the Yoshi is exactly like the "classic Yoshi", with a longer back for the character to sit on. However, when no one is on Yoshi, Yoshi has his modern appearance. This may have been done to give Yoshi his modern appearance while still being able to give various characters a ride.
Overall, Yoshi's buffs are significant enough to have noticeably improved his viability from Brawl. To reflect this, Yoshi is currently ranked 34th on the tier list, placing him in the D tier. While Yoshi has a minimal presence in competitive play despite his strengths, he has achieved varying degrees of success regardless. This includes winning a few local tournaments in both singles and doubles play, and achieving several top 50 placings (some of which are top 10 placings) at regional and national tournaments.

Yoshi (ヨッシー, Yoshi) is a character in the Mario series. Since his debut in Super Mario World as an ally of Mario and Luigi, Yoshi's popularity has resulted in him starring in his own series, which follows the adventures of Yoshi and/or his eponymous species.

As a member of the "perfect-attendance crew", Yoshi has been featured as a playable character throughout the Super Smash Bros. series.

Origin[edit]

In earlier designs, Yoshi had a longer neck and scarlet shoes. Now his neck is shorter, his arms are longer, and his scales are more rounded.
Official artwork of Yoshi from Super Mario World. This appearance inspired his design for Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Shigeru Miyamoto considered giving Mario some kind of companion as far back as the planning stages of Super Mario Bros., but the concept was scrapped due to hardware limitations. During the development of Super Mario Bros. 3, Miyamoto had drawn a picture of Mario riding a horse. Taking note of the picture, Takashi Tezuka came to the conclusion that Miyamoto desired Mario to ride something, and implemented that idea into the development of Super Mario World.[1]

Due to Dinosaur Land being the setting of Super Mario World, Tezuka had Shigefumi Hino draw artwork for a kind of reptile. According to Hino, he took "horse" as a keyword and designed a large lizard similar to a crocodile in order to better integrate the concept.[1] After reconsidering this design, Hino and Tezuka instead decided to use a rough sketch drawn by Tezuka, which was refined by Hino into what would become Yoshi's finalized design.[1]

Yoshi is the most recurring member of the sapient and friendly reptilian species of the same name. The Yoshi species possesses an amalgamation of reptilian characteristics: the physique of a theropod dinosaur, a turtle-like shell that functions as a saddle,[1] and a chameleon-like tongue. On a related note, a chameleon's ability to change their skin coloration could be referenced by the variety of color schemes present among the various other Yoshis.

The Yoshi species debuted in Super Mario World, where Mario or Luigi would be able to find Yoshi Eggs, which would hatch automatically to reveal a fully grown Yoshi. Later in the game, Baby Yoshis could also be found. Baby Yoshis can be held, thrown, and matured into fully grown Yoshis. In order to do the latter, a Baby Yoshi must eat five enemies.

Alongside Yoshi himself, three differently colored Yoshis also appear, each of which has a distinct special ability that can be used so long as they have a Koopa Troopa shell in their mouths. Blue Yoshi can fly, Red Yoshi can spit out Fireballs, and Yellow Yoshi can emit a sand cloud after landing a jump. While Yoshi himself does not have any distinct special abilities, he can use each of the three other Yoshis' abilities by holding a shell of the same color as the respective Yoshi, such as a red shell allowing him to spit out Fireballs. By extension, the other three Yoshis can do the same.

In the Yoshi series[edit]

After the success of Super Mario World and the positive reception of Yoshi, Nintendo capitalized by releasing several spinoff entries at a rapid pace. These include the puzzle games Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie, the light gun game Yoshi's Safari compatible with the Super Scope. Due to Shigeru Miyamoto's dislike of these games, he aimed to make a game starring Yoshi that was authentic to his character.[2] This game would come to be known as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which saw a myriad of differently colored members of the species appear. The Yoshis' ability to eat virtually anything was expanded to include the ability to create Yoshi Eggs capable of being thrown. In addition, Yellow Yoshi's sand cloud-generating jump was modified into a Ground Pound usable by all other Yoshis. Outside of these updated abilities, the Yoshis also gained the ability to Flutter Jump[1] and transform into vehicles. Following this, Panel de Pon would be reskinned as Tetris Attack for international markets, featuring Yoshi and the many new characters introduced in Yoshi's Island.

In addition to being the first installment of the Yoshi's Island sub-series, Super Mario World 2 is the first installment in the Mario series' in-universe timeline: it details Baby Luigi being captured by Kamek and his Toadies while being delivered by a stork, while a group of Yoshis discover the missing Baby Mario and work to rejoin him with his twin brother. After being rescued by the Yoshis, the stork resumes its journey to deliver the newly reunited baby Mario Bros. to their parents. This same plotline would be retold in the endless runner game, Yoshi Touch & Go.

That is followed by the next event in the Yoshi canon, Yoshi's New Island, where upon arriving at its supposed destination, the stork discovers that the family living there were not expecting children. This mishap results in the stork once again being attacked by Kamek and his Toadies, who recapture Baby Luigi while Baby Mario falls to the floating Egg Island, which is home to another group of Yoshis. Pipe.

Despite the stork successfully delivering the baby Mario Bros. to their proper parents, Kamek and his Toadies nevertheless kidnap several babies from across the Mushroom Kingdom as part of their search for the seven star children, thus leading to the events in Yoshi's Island DS. Unlike the previous two instances, the stork fights back against Kamek and the Toadies, thus resulting in Baby Mario and Baby Peach being dropped onto Yoshi's Island during the scuffle. Upon reuniting with Baby Mario, the Yoshis decide to save not only Baby Luigi, but also any other babies that were kidnapped. During their journey, they ally with three other star children: Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong and Baby Wario.

However, a squabble between the Baby and present day Bowsers results in Bowser inadvertently causing his infant self to fall out of his castle, land on a Yoshi's back, and thus create an uneasy alliance between Baby Bowser (who is a star child himself) and his longtime foes.

Although the seventh and final star child is not encountered by the Yoshis, Bowser or Kamek, the ending reveals the final star child to be a newly hatched green Baby Yoshi, thus strongly implying him to be the very same Yoshi character that the grown up Mario Bros. would go on to rescue and ally with in Super Mario World and subsequent Mario games.

Several other Yoshi platformer games have also been released, seemingly outside of the Yoshi's Island canon, Yoshi's Story tells the story of a group of Yoshi hatchlings who must retrieve the Super Happy Tree that provides their adult counterparts with their undying optimism from Baby Bowser, Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, a gyrometer-based game, introduces a set of mostly human-like characters known as the Yoshi Island Spirits, who Yoshi must complete missions from to prove he's worthy of taking on the adult Bowser, Yoshi's Woolly World, where a group of Yoshis made of wool must work together to rescue one another after being scattered as bundles of yarn by Kamek and Baby Bowser, and Yoshi's Crafted World where the Yoshis have to recover pieces of the wish-granting Sundream Stone from Baby Bowser and Kamek - These titles all take place in worlds made to appear homemade out of materials such as cardboard and wool. The only baby shown in these particular games is Baby Bowser.

In Super Smash Bros.[edit]

As a playable character[edit]

Main article: Yoshi (SSB)
Official artwork of Yoshi from Super Smash Bros.

Yoshi makes his first appearance in a fighting game in Super Smash Bros. as a starting playable character. His design is based on his appearance from Super Mario World. In comparison to the rest of the roster, Yoshi is arguably the most unique. His shield is a Yoshi Egg instead of a standard bubble that shrinks, which makes him immune to shield stabbing.

Yoshi's in-game description reads:

Yoshi
Yoshi is the friendly dinosaur of Yoshi's Island. He began as Mario's partner, but has since built his own identity, and now appears in many games. He uses his unique ability to turn whatever he swallows into an egg as his foremost attack. Yoshis come in a rainbow of colors and are said to have a high IQ from a very early age.

While Yoshi was initially regarded poorly, his position in the current metagame has improved significantly thanks to some Yoshi professionals, most notably aMSa. As a result, Yoshi is ranked 10th on the current tier list, placing him in the B+ tier.

Trophies[edit]

As a playable character, Yoshi has three trophies - a normal trophy won beating the Classic Mode with Yoshi on any difficulty, and "Smash Red" and "Smash Blue" trophies are acquired by beating the Adventure and All-Star modes, respectively. He is also present in the "Mario & Yoshi" trophy, which can only be acquired in the NTSC and PAL versions via hacking device, whereas it could only be acquired in the Japanese version via a special Japanese events or by using a hacking device.[3]

Yoshis are gentle, fleet-of-foot dinosaurs that make their home on idyllic Yoshi's Island. They come in a variety of colors and have evolved an interesting trait to help increase their numbers: they can transform anything they swallow into an egg. With adhesive tongues and bottomless bellies, Yoshis have been known to eat anything.

The pair can make huge jumps and drift slowly back to earth, though. As a last resort, Mario could leap off Yoshi's back to safety.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

As a playable character[edit]

Main article: Yoshi (SSBB)
Yoshi, as he appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Yoshi once again returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Unlike in SSB and Melee, he now sports his design since Yoshi's Story, Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario Party 4.

Super Dragon involves him growing angelic wings that allow him to fly and gaining the ability to breathe fire either as a powerful Fireball or a stream of flames, while he is rendered invincible throughout its duration.

As a result of the severity of his nerfs, Yoshi is ranked 27th on the current tier list, placing him in the D tier.

In Super Smash Bros. 4[edit]

As a playable character[edit]

Main article: Yoshi (SSB4)
Yoshi as he appears in Super Smash Bros. 4.
Yoshi, as he appears in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Yoshi returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. In addition to a more upright posture, SSB4's aesthetic has resulted in Yoshi's overall color scheme being considerably more vibrant and his design being more cartoony. Altogether, these changes make him appear much more in line with his appearances in the latest Mario and Yoshi games. He also has two new alternate costumes: Purple Yoshi and Black Yoshi.

Trivia[edit]

  • Although Yoshi is a heavyweight in the Super Smash Bros. series, this is contradictory to his weight classification in the Mario Kart series. Yoshi is characterized as being the fastest of the lightweights in Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, and has been a middleweight (slightly lighter than Mario and Luigi, and tied with Princess Peach and Princess Daisy) as of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! He shares this quirk with Bowser Jr.
    • Rosalina follows an inversion of this quirk: she is a heavyweight in the Mario Kart series, yet is a lightweight in the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • Yoshi is the only character in the Super Smash Bros. series to use the same set of voice clips since SSB, though this also applies to Jigglypuff in games with the language set to English.
    • This also means he has been using the same voice clips longer than any other character in the Super Smash Bros. series.
    • Unlike Bowser, the Donkey Kong characters and Petey Piranha, Yoshi retains his voice actor from the Yoshi and Mario series. He shares this trait with Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, who are all voiced by their respective Mario series actors, and both Banjo and Kazooie, who are voiced by Chris Sutherland.
    • He is also the only playable character in the series to have always used voice clips that are sourced from his own games, instead of clips specifically recorded for a Super Smash Bros. game.
  • Yoshi is the only character to have a unique shield. In his case, it is a Yoshi Egg instead of a bubble.
  • Prior to SSB4, the color of the Yoshi Egg used during Egg Roll and Egg Throw would be white with green spots, regardless of Yoshi's selected color scheme.
  • Yoshi and Captain Falcon are the only sole fighters from their respective universes to appear throughout the Super Smash Bros. series.
    • Yoshi is also the only fighter among the single-fighter universes to remain a starter in each game he appears in.
  • Including sub-franchises, Yoshi is the only Mario fighter to not have "Congratulations" written in Mario-themed font in his congratulations screen in SSB4.
  • Prior to Brawl, Yoshi and Jigglypuff were the only characters whose up special moves could not be used for recovery.
    • Both characters notably have the fastest air speeds by default, although Mewtwo and Yoshi are tied for the second fastest air speed in Melee.
  • Yoshi's punching victory pose is likely a humorous reference to one of Akuma's victory poses or his Raging Demon (瞬獄殺, Blinking Prison Killer), which concludes with an identical pose. This is even referenced in Ryu's All-Star Mode congratulations screen in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and later again in a challenge board image in Ultimate.
  • Yoshi, Wario, Luigi, Snake, Roy, Corrin, and Joker are the only playable characters to feature material from games scheduled for release after an installment of Super Smash Bros. In Yoshi's case, he has a stage based on various levels from Yoshi's Woolly World in SSB4, and an alternate costume in Ultimate based on his appearance in Yoshi's Crafted World.
