[still incomplete]
After completing this I realize that Riki and Metal Face are perhaps not rated fairly because they lack a major section. Hmmmm could be some improvement there.

Maybe later I'll invent further Xenbolade spirits just for extra fun.

Revision as of 21:46, October 30, 2019

Some spirits are good at copying what the character's about. Others not so much. I felt like iterating over the Xenoblade ones.

There will be more spoilers in here than SSBU has. Yes, this is possible.

I'll be looking at six things:

  • Type (whether you're main or support doesn't seem fair to count - just the four battle types)
  • Rank/Slots/Power
  • Ability
  • Battle character(s) and stage
  • Battle conditions

Each note is given a loose rating.

  • +3: Genius
  • +2: Fitting
  • +1: Fair
  • ±0: Neutral
  • -1: Curious
  • -2: Unfitting
  • -3: Failure

I will try to be stingy with the 3s but hey this whole thing is just a fun diversion anyway.

Spirit Type Rank/Slots/Power Ability Battle character(s) and stage Battle conditions Rating
Shulk Spirit.png
Shulk
Fighter spirit, as worthless as he is at not being a nerd.
File:Fiora2.png
Fiora
SpiritTypeShield.png
No. No no no no no. Fiora is more of a glass cannon than Shulk is for crying out loud. [-3]
★★★ ⬢ 9,300
Oh please. Fiora doesn't even get a chance to learn a fifth art, she's not deserving of rank three. [-2]
Made of Metal
This is the Homs Fiora spirit. Need I say more? [-3]
Lucina+Shulk, Gaur Plain (BF)
Probably can't do much better. [±0]
You have reduced defense after a little while
Fiora's arts include "4-hit combo", "backstab", "break", "daze", and "bleed". Shulk's the one with "lower defense". He's on the field at the time so it's not unreasonable, but. [±0]
-8
Mechafiora.png
Mecha-Fiora
SpiritTypeNeutral.png 0.46 A : 0.54 D
This is correct. Mecha-Fiora can be adapted to fit various roles. [+2]
★★★★ ⬡⬡⬡ 13,200 (4,058 - 10,149)
On one hand I think "that's a bit much", since she's literally falling apart and is expected to just die at random later. On the other hand she hosts Meyneth, goddess of Mechonis, and borrows her power and Monado. So I dunno. [±0]
Jump ↑
Agility is not a particular thing of hers. [-1]
Corrin+Shulk, Reset Bomb Forest
Corrin confuses me while also feeling about as good as you can get, so dunno what to say about it. But I fail to see the stage connection at all here, it just doesn't make sense. [-2]
Hostile assist trophies will appear (Riki)
Heropon very cool but Fiora has the least connection to him out of the whole party. [-1]
-2
Reyn.png
Reyn
SpiritTypeGrab.png 0.2 A : 0.8 D
Reyn is face-tank extraordinaire and you're tryin' to tell me that not only he's not a Shield spirit, but he loses to Attack spirits. C'mon man. (The attack:defense ratio isn't even that good, Reyn's no slouch at damage either.) [-3]
★★ ⬡ 4,300 (1,662 - 6,688)
This is probably fair. Reyn is just beef, aside from gains without brains he's mostly a regular dude. [+2]
(no ability)
They could've done so much here, but they just didn't. [-1]
Ryu, Gaur Plain (BF)
Okay Reyn is buff, but at least give him Ike, he's got a sword. [-2]
The enemy has super armor but moves slower
Timed Stamina battle
The enemy loves to taunt
This is pretty good. I happen to think shielding would've been better than armour but it's fine by itself. [+2]
-2
Sharla Spirit.png
Sharla
SpiritTypeAttack.png
Not a fan of this choice. Sharla might have a gun but she's mostly a healer. [-1]
★★ ⬢ 3,700
Very appropriate: slightly below average support. [+2]
Ray Gun Equipped
Missed opportunity, should've been the Insight Staff instead (that's the snipy weapon). [-1]
Zero Suit Samus, Gaur Plain
Yeah this is the best option. [+2]
Ray Guns only
The enemy's shooting items have increased power
The enemy starts the battle with a Ray Gun
Again, Ray Gun isn't the snip snip. (To be fair, this stage would suck to try and snipe on.) [-1]
+1
File:Dunban Spirit.png
Dunban
SpiritTypeShield.png 0.55 A : 0.45 D (= Fiora + Reyn)
This was a tough choice but I think they got it right: he's primarily a tank, and he does his tanking via large amounts of damage. A more skewed ratio would've been perfect. Being summonable from Fiora and Reyn is a strange choice because he's their mentor, but it also doesn't feel unreasonable. [+2]
★★★ ⬡⬡ 9,200 (2,939 - 8,844)
Seems a bit high, but Dunban is Hero of the Homs and was the only one who could control the Monado in the fourteen years pregame. I think it fits. [+2]
Sword Attack ↑
Yeah that's it chief. [+2]
Mii Swordfighter (Dunban wig/outfit)+Shulk, Gaur Plain
lol [+3]
Defeat the main fighter to win
The enemy will suddenly have a Final Smash
The enemy's melee weapons have increased power
Dunban has an art that fills his talent gauge so the sudden FS fits. The other bits feel tacked on but they aren't ridiculous. [+2]
+11
Melia.png
Melia
SpiritTypeNeutral.png 0.55 A : 0.45 D
Neutral with slight attack skew is probably as close as you can get to "mostly support with well-timed huge damage". I would however think a bigger skew would fit better. [+2]
★★ ⬡⬡⬡ 4,200 (1,518 - 6,144)
Difficult, very difficult. Based on the other party members, Melia feels like the perfect example of a 2.5-star class. Having three slots is probably no better way to find a middle ground so we'll go with that. [+2]
Magic Attack ↑
Obvious. [+2]
Palutena+Shulk, Gaur Plain
The only staff user available so this was inevitable. [+2]
The floor is poisonous
The enemy's magic attacks have increased power
Poison is what makes Summon Earth the most damaging art in the game by a long shot, and the community also instantly latched onto it also being a reference to the Lorithia fight. Nothing could fit better. [+3]
+11
Riki Spirit.png
Riki
SpiritTypeNeutral.png
Riki do small bit of everything and not best at any, neutral good fit. [+2]
Master (+Specials -Attack -Throw - Item)
If Riki picked for Master because of Nopon-speak, that by itself top good choice. Exact dojo style feel okay. [+2]
Bowser Jr. (Roy)+Shulk, Gaur Plain
Meh. Not many good pick for Riki skills, but Kirby be much besterer. [-1]
Earthquake
Flowery
The enemy's special moves have increased power
Hostile assist trophies will appear (Riki)
All good choice. Riki himself show up, while stage fake Riki arts and mimic dojo skill. [+2]
+5
Mumkhar.png
Mumkhar
SpiritTypeAttack.png 0.62 A : 0.38 D
Mumkhar doesn't appear for long enough to get a true feel for him, but he is indeed equipped to kill things and enjoys it, so attack is appropriate. [+2]
★★ ⬡ 3,800 (1,834 - 7,379)
He is a large man without much apparent in the way of special skills, much like Reyn, so it's fair that he's on the same level. [+2]
Enhanceable (Metal Face)
They didn't need to do us like this but they did and it's indeed fitting. [+2]
Wolf
Yeah we have the pointy fingers here. [+2]
The enemy is giant when the enemy's at high damage
The enemy will occasionally turn metal when the enemy's at high damage
Stamina battle
It feels like they figured "you can't fight Metal Face because he's an enhanced form, so let's staple him in here". Which I suppose is arguably fitting but it still feels quite wrong. [-1]
+7
Metal Face Spirit.png
Metal Face
SpiritTypeAttack.png 0.56 A : 0.44 D
Metal Face is even more of a killer than Mumkhar so I'm a bit mystified at why his ratio is more even. [+1]
★★★★ ⬡ (4,996 - 12,493)
Sure he seems like an unbeatable juggernaut for a while, but he stops being special after a bit. I think this is inflated just to fit the ability. [+1]
Metal and Giant
These are both a true fact. [+2]
(no battle)
