A spike is not to be confused with a [[Meteor Smash]], which also sends the opponent downwards, but can be Meteor Canceled before the hitlag depletes.
Few characters have spikes; currently there are 5 characters who have a known spike, and are as follows:

*1) Falco's Dair.
Only 5 Spikes on [[Super Smash Bros.]] are known.
*2) Marth's Dair. ([[NTSC]] only)
*3) Ganondorf's Aerial Down+B.
*4) Captain Falcon's [[Nipple Spike]] (Hitting with the upper half of his body during the dair)
*5) Roy's Up Smash (Must hit an airborne opponent with the tip of the sword)

Note also that Spikes don't necessarily kill the opponent each time: at low damages the downwards thrust wears off and the spiked opponent can recover.
Regardless of this, recovery tends to be impossible at percentages near or above 40%.
The spike is almost always devastating to the opponent; because of this, many Falco and Marth players try to integrate it into play as often as possible.

Since there is no meteor canceling in the original SSB64 and SSBB, all "meteors" are considered spikes.

A spike is a very useful move in the game. The spike is an attack which throws you DOWN and does not meet the standards of a meteor smash. This means that the attack cannot be canceled.

Only 5 Spikes on Super Smash Bros. are known.

 • Falco's Down Aerial attack. The most known useful and quick spike in the game, it throws the enemy really down at high speeds.
 • Ganondorf's Down B aerial attack. This attack will throw the enemy at a 40% angle down aiming to where the attack face was.
 • Roy's Upwards Smash. This attack, if executed correctly, can be the most powerful spike but since it must be done on earth and is very difficult to perfect without getting hurt, this attack is not commonly seen on games.
 • Marth's Down aerial attack. If Marth doesn't touch the opponent with the hand, this can be a powerful attack. It is widely used by gamers since it is easy to perfect.
 • Captain Falcon's Down Aerial attack. This attack was discovered 3 years later by a user of the Smashboards forum. If hit with the upper part of the body, the player wont be able to cancel it.
